Deakin Student Support Scholarship

This scholarship offers financial support to students who display passion, perseverance and commitment to study and experience financial or personal hardship.

What are the benefits for you?


Various options for support are available:

  • $10,000* per year for the normal duration of your course or
  • $7,500* per year for the normal duration of your course or
  • $5,000* per year for the normal duration of your course or
  • $2,500* per year for the normal duration of your course or
  • $1,000 per year for one year.

Deakin has streamlined its application process so when you select the Deakin Funded Scholarships Program 2016 option you will be considered for the Deakin Student Support Scholarship as well as the Deakin Scholarship for Excellence in the selection process. This reduces the number scholarships you have to apply for and increases your chances of receiving a Deakin scholarship.

* amounts will be pro-rated if you are in a part-time study load.

Eligibility criteria

All conditions must be met

  • an Australian citizen or holder of an Australian permanent humanitarian visa
  • commencing or currently enrolled student in an associate, bachelor or honours degree in a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) or postgraduate by coursework degree (CSP or full fee)
  • enrolled at Deakin University in Trimester 2 2016
  • enrolled full time unless there are circumstances preventing full time study
  • experiencing financial or personal hardship.

Areas of hardship can include:

  • financial hardship - recipient of a means-tested Centrelink benefit or can demonstrate personal or family taxable income below the HELP repayment threshold, depending on independence status
  • regional or remote home location
  • disability/long term medical condition
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background
  • recent refugee
  • other demonstrable hardship.

Selection criteria

You will be assessed and ranked based on the information you provide in your application and supporting documentation.

Opening and closing dates

Applications for Trimester 2 2016 open 6 June 2016 and close 11 July 2016 at 5pm.

How to apply

You must complete an online application via the Deakin Course and Scholarship Applicant Portal. You will need to ensure you register your details to obtain an applicant ID. This number will be required when you email your supporting documentation. Once you have logged in to the portal, click on Apply-> Scholarships and Grants and you will be taken through the application process. 

You will be required to provide your personal details in Step 1 and will be asked some questions in Step 2 to determine your eligibility for the scholarships on offer. Please ensure that you select Deakin Funded Scholarships Program 2016 in Step 3 to be considered for this scholarship. You will then be given the opportunity to provide written responses to the questions in Step 4. You will be asked to provide detailed responses to questions like 'Describe how your disadvantage has impacted your studies' or 'How will this scholarship benefit you?'.

Spend some time, review your responses. You can save your application and come back later. The information you provide can change your future! 

You will then be able to review your application in Step 5 and you can go back and edit your responses if needed. When you are ready to submit your application in Step 6, click on the 'Submit Selected Applications' button. You will receive confirmation of your application via email. After submitting your application you must email your supporting documentation to   

Supporting documentation

As part of the application process you will also be required to provide supporting documentation. You must email your supporting documents with your applicant ID number in the subject line to by the scholarship closing date.

The supporting documentation required includes evidence of:

  • any financial hardship
  • any medical condition
  • any other disadvantage you are experiencing
  • confirmation of any statement you have provided in your online application.

Successful applicants will be contacted within six weeks of the closing date.
