Deakin Student Support Scholarship

This scholarship offers financial support to students who display passion, perseverance and commitment to study and experience financial or personal hardship.

What are the benefits for you?


Various options for support are available:

  • $10,000* per year for the normal duration of your course or
  • $7,500* per year for the normal duration of your course or
  • $5,000* per year for the normal duration of your course or
  • $2,500* per year for the normal duration of your course or
  • $1,000 per year for one year.

Deakin has streamlined its application process so when you select the Deakin Funded Scholarships Program option you will be considered for the Vice-Chancellor's Academic Excellence Scholarship, Deakin Scholarship for Excellence as well as the Deakin Student Support Scholarship in the selection process. This reduces the number scholarships you have to apply for and increases your chances of receiving a Deakin scholarship.

* amounts will be pro-rated if you are in a part-time study load.

Eligibility criteria

All conditions must be met

  • an Australian citizen or holder of an Australian permanent humanitarian visa
  • commencing or currently enrolled student in an associate, bachelor or honours degree in a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) or postgraduate by coursework degree (CSP or full fee)
  • enrolled at Deakin University in 2017
  • enrolled full time unless there are circumstances preventing full-time study
  • experiencing financial or personal hardship.

Areas of hardship can include:

  • financial hardship - recipient of a means-tested Centrelink benefit or can demonstrate personal or family taxable income below the HELP repayment threshold, depending on independence status
  • regional or remote home location
  • disability/long term medical condition
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background
  • recent refugee
  • other demonstrable hardship.

Selection criteria

Your application will be assessed and ranked based on the information and supporting documentation you provide.

During the online application, you will be asked to provide information about yourself and your hardship. You will also be asked to provide documentation and evidence to support your application.

Opening and closing dates

Applications for Trimester 1 2017 open 29 August 2016 and close 12 January 2017 at 5pm.

Deakin will begin to offer scholarships from 12 December 2016 and will continue to award scholarships until fully offered.

Opening dates for students commencing in Trimester 2  2017 and Trimester 3 2017 will be announced in the coming months.

How to apply

Scholarship applications are made via the Deakin Course and Scholarship Applicant Portal. You will need to ensure you register your details to obtain an applicant ID. Once you have logged into the portal, click on Apply -> Scholarships and Grants and you will be taken through the application process. 

You will be required to provide your personal details in Step 1 and will be asked some questions in Step 2 to determine your eligibility for the scholarships on offer. Please ensure you select the Deakin Funded Scholarships Program in Step 3 to be considered for this scholarship. You will be given the opportunity to provide written responses to the questions in Step 4.  You will be asked to provide detailed responses to questions like 'How do your experience and skills demonstrate that you have the characteristics required for this scholarship' or 'How will this scholarship benefit you?'.

Spend some time and review your responses. You can save your application and come back later. The information you provide can change your future! 

You will be able to review your application in Step 5 and you can go back and edit your responses if needed.  When you are ready, submit your application in Step 6, click on the 'Submit Selected Applications' button. You will receive confirmation of your application via email. You should then upload your documentation using the Upload Documents button.

VTAC course applicants

If you are applying for a place at Deakin University in Trimester 1 2017 via VTAC you can complete a VTAC Scholarships Application.  When you complete the VTAC Scholarship Application it will be assessed for the Deakin Student Support Scholarship..

Supporting documentation

As part of the application process you will be required to provide supporting documentation.Make sure you choose the correct Document type when you upload your documents as it will make a difference.  If your documents are uploaded into the incorrect Document type they will not be considered when assessing your application. Remember it is quality, not quantity, which you need to provide.  Aim to provide documents which are current, relevant and concise. 

The supporting documentation required includes evidence of:

  • any financial hardship
  • any medical condition
  • any other disadvantage you are experiencing
  • confirmation of any statement you have provided in your online application.

Please visit the Supporting documentation page for examples of the types of documents you could provide. Late or incomplete documentation will not be accepted.     

VTAC course applicants

Remember if you are applying through the VTAC Scholarship Application please ensure you read the VTAC supporting documentation requirements and submit your documents by the date listed on the VTAC website.

When will I know

Successful applicants will be contacted within six weeks of the closing date.
