Research prizes, awards and medals
Alfred Deakin Medals for Doctoral Theses
The Alfred Deakin Medal for Doctoral Thesis will be awarded each year to up to four Deakin University doctoral research candidates who produce the most outstanding theses.
A framed Alfred Deakin Medal for Doctoral Thesis will be awarded to the successful candidates at one of the annual graduation ceremonies, and an appropriate endorsement made on their academic record. In addition to a medal, each successful applicant will receive a cash prize of $1000.
Eligible candidates for the Alfred Deakin Medal for Doctoral Thesis must have completed a doctoral degree by research at Deakin University in the previous twelve-month period (calendar year) after only one examination (i.e. must not have undergone a re-examination).
Faculties and Institutes may each nominate up to three doctoral candidates who have completed in the previous twelve-month period. Candidates may not self-nominate.
Excellence in Research Supervision award
An annual award is made by the Vice-Chancellor recognising achievements by staff resulting from their supervision of higher degree by research candidates. The award consists of a $5,000 grant which may be used to further the recipient's research (e.g. travel to a conference, purchase of a specific piece of equipment), a trophy and a framed certificate.
Nominations may be made by academic or general staff of Deakin University, or current or former higher degree by research candidates of Deakin University.
Recipients of an award are ineligible for further awards in this category for the subsequent five years.
Supervisors may not self-nominate.
Neil Archbold Memorial Travel Awards
Neil Archbold Memorial Travel Awards are to be awarded each year to the two Deakin University higher degree by research candidates who produce the best peer-reviewed journal articles:
- One award will be made available to a candidate in the sciences (in recognition of Professor Archbold's home discipline). This category is NOT restricted to applicants from the Faculty of Science, Engineering and the Built Environment.
- The second award will be made available to a candidate in the humanities/social sciences.
The travel awards, of $3000 each, are to be used during candidature for research-related travel.
The awardees will also be presented with a medal at graduation or some other significant event.
The Isi Leibler Prize
The Isi Leibler Prize is awarded to the student who has submitted a Masters or PhD thesis approved over the previous year, in any Faculty of Deakin University, which best contributes to advancing knowledge of racial, religious or ethnic prejudice in any time or place, or to advancing knowledge of multiculturalism and community relations in Australia.
Applications will be invited by an announcement placed on the Web, on University noticeboards, in Network and published in the Handbooks and student newspapers.
A prize of $1000 is awarded. The prize is presented at one of the annual graduation ceremonies and an appropriate endorsement made on the successful student's academic record.

Research degree scholarships opportunities are available to Masters by Research and Doctoral students at Deakin University.
