Casual Academic Staff Handbook

Introduction to this handbook

This handbook is designed to provide support for new and inexperienced casual academic staff at Deakin University. It is organised into sections which reflect many of the issues that new casual academics face, and need to know about so that you may perform effectively in your role at the University.

These sections provide you with guidance on matters such as:

  • your induction needs
  • becoming oriented to the University’s policies, processes and procedures
  • your role in Deakin’s Principles of Teaching and Learning and the Student Experience
  • how you can contribute to the Deakin student experience.

The handbook will not contain everything you need to know, but will be regularly updated online as information changes. So if there are things you are uncertain about, there are many people at Deakin willing to assist you. Some of these are included in this handbook. Others you will come to know within your School and Faculty. ‘Local knowledge’ within your community of practice is invaluable!

We welcome you to Deakin and hope that you find your time with the University rewarding.
