TravelSmart is a State Government program with the objective of motivating ongoing sustainable travel behaviour. TravelSmart aims to reduce people’s dependency on cars and encourage them to choose sustainable travel alternatives such as cycling, walking and public transport. Smarter travel choices can be made by changing one or two trips per week, or by reducing the number of car journeys.
In 2007 Deakin University received funding from the Department of Transport to implement the TravelSmart program on the Melbourne Burwood Campus. Due to the large proportion of staff and students travelling to and from the Melbourne Burwood Campus in a single occupant motor vehicle, queues of cars entering the university at peak hour and problems with parking availability at times of peak demand, signaled that more could be done to address more sustainable travel options for the Melbourne Burwood Campus community.
Although the Melbourne Burwood Campus TravelSmart project officially ended on 30 June 2010, key successful components of TravelSmart are to be extended across all four Campuses over the forthcoming years, as such the website has been updated to reflect recent developments. TravelSmart will now be managed by the Office of Environment and form a part of the Sustainable Transport program.
