2011 AUQA Audit

Audit Report

On 23 January Deakin received the final report of its 2011 quality audit from the new regulatory body TEQSA (Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency). The report is a fair one and reasonably reflects that Deakin is a good University. We received:

  • six Commendations acknowledging our achievements
  • six Affirmations endorsing improvement actions that were already planned or being implemented by Deakin at the time of the audit, and
  • seven Recommendations in relation to additional areas identified through the audit process as needing attention.

The Vice-Chancellor thanks all staff for their contribution to a successful audit outcome and encourages them to read the report and reflect on how we can continue to improve as we develop and finalise our new Strategic Plan.

The AUQA Audit is complete

The AUQA Auditors have completed their visit to Deakin University, 14-17 June.

A huge thank you is extended to the Deakin community for your engagement with the audit process.

Approximately 270 staff, students and community partners were interviewed and many more assisted in other ways.

Everyone who has been involved in even the smallest way has contributed to a successful audit visit.

Again, a big thank you.

AUQA Performance Portfolio

The Performance Portfolio provided to the AUQA Panel is available for your information. (see Quick Links)

The document includes the appendices and links to the case studies, which are available on a dedicated web page (see Quick Links). The portfolio has been developed on the basis of the self-review process, various discussions, collection of data and feedback provided by the Deakin community. Please note that the Supporting Materials are provided to AUQA for audit use only, and are not linked from this document.

2011 AUQA audit - background

The Australian Universities Quality Agency (AUQA), audited Deakin University in June 2011. AUQA carries out independent quality audits of all higher education institutions and accredited authorities, approximately every five years. The audit was an important opportunity for Deakin to take a close look at its quality improvement processes and to gain external feedback about those processes. The audit was in two parts, a progress review of areas identified in the Cycle 1 audit in 2004 and a closer investigation of specific areas or ‘themes’.

The themes for the 2011 audit were chosen by AUQA through discussions with Deakin:

1. Achieving Deakin's teaching and learning goals through effective partnerships, including:

  • pathways to higher education
  • orientation and transition
  • student support (including academic learning and language support throughout the student lifecycle, identification of learning support needs and provision of support across different modes of delivery)
  • course development and review
  • flexible course delivery
  • teaching strategies to support student learning
  • leadership and other professional development of teaching staff
  • indigenous education
  • work integrated learning.

2. Internationalisation, including:

  • management of internationalisation
  • international student recruitment
  • international student support
  • community engagement
  • transnational education and engagement
  • internationalisation of the curriculum and the overall student experience
  • international partnerships to advance research and research training.

In particular AUQA looked for:

  • evidence of self review of the themes
  • outcomes of benchmarking
  • an indication of how processes are linked to outcomes
  • a description of processes in place to assure alignment with relevant external reference points (including the National Protocols for Higher Education Approval Processes).

Deakin University acknowledges the traditional land owners of present campus sites.
