Parking information for visitors to Deakin Campuses

Parking permit zones

Deakin University has several parking permit zones identified by VicRoads approved signs. Vehicles parked on Deakin campuses between 8.30 am and 4.30 pm Monday to Friday usually require a current parking permit, except when parked in the limited number of free parking spaces in:

  • Car Park 11 at the Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus
  • Car Park 11 at the Warrnambool Campus.

The free car park at Warrnambool is only usable in dry weather, so will be closed when conditions are unsuitable for parking.

Campus maps show the parking areas on each campus.

Geelong Waterfront Campus

There is no on-campus parking for visitors to the Geelong Waterfront Campus unless special arrangements have been made. See more about car parking and transportation in the surrounding area.

Melbourne Burwood Campus

On-campus parking is very limited at the Melbourne Burwood Campus – particularly at the start of Trimester 1 and during examination periods – and fees apply, so you are encouraged to seek alternatives, such as public transport or cycling, or to carpool.

Casual day visitors

All parking permit vending machines accept coins or credit cards, but do not give change. Alternatively, daily Scratch Permits can be purchased from the Cashier Offices. These must be scratched with the correct day, month and year, or they are invalid.

Casual day visitors are required to purchase daily parking permits from permit vending machines located in car parks and/or entry roads.

All day parking permits are valid in Blue and Red Permit Zones only.

Casual visitors to the Melbourne Burwood Campus can also use the $1.00 per hour Permit Zones located in Car Park 6, level 1, and Car Park 12, level 3. $1.00 per hour parking permits (with a 3-hour time limit) can be purchased from the machines located in these Permit zones.

Disabled access

All campuses have disabled parking spaces close to buildings. If you have a Type 1 Disabled Parking Permit issued from your local council you can park in any disabled parking space. No further permits are required.

Enforcement

Deakin University car parks are regularly patrolled by authorised officers who may issue parking infringement notices. Fines may be imposed for various breaches of Parking Regulations, including:

  • vehicles parked outside marked bays (e.g. at the end of rows or on grassed areas)
  • vehicles left in No Stopping areas and Loading Zones
  • vehicles not displaying a valid parking permit.

Official guests

If you are attending the University as an official guest, your host should provide you with a Yellow Daily Scratch Permit. Yellow Daily Scratch Permits are valid for one day only in Yellow, Blue or Red zones. Alternatively you can park in the areas where there is a Parking Permit Vending Machine.

Motorcycles, scooters and bicycles

Parking permits are not required for motorcycles, scooters or bicycles. Motorcycles and scooters must park in designated motorcycle bays or on footpaths, provided they are not parked in such a manner as to cause an obstruction to pedestrians. Bicycles should be parked in designated bicycle racks.

Road safety rules

All campuses are governed by the Road Safety Road Rules 2009, as are all Victorian roads. This means that you must obey all road rules, including speed limits and parking restrictions.

Visiting residents

If you are visiting a resident at the University you must display a valid parking permit.  Please see more information for under 'Casual day visitors' above.

Please note that only residents with valid permits are permitted to park in Purple zones adjacent to residences.

Your responsibilities

  • You must park vehicles in a defined parking space, in a defined car park. Signs at the entrance to each car park remind you to obey the coloured permit parking zones.
  • Parking permits should be placed on the left-hand side of the windscreen. Please ensure that your parking permit is visible at all times and is not obscured by window tinting, sunshades, sunvisors, or windscreen wipers. Check your vehicle before you leave it to make sure that your valid permit is displayed correctly.
  • Owner onus applies to all car parks and roads at Deakin University Campuses. Car parks are regularly patrolled by Deakin University security officers however you should always 'look and lock before you leave'.
  • Parking permits allow the holder to park in a vacant bay in the zone(s) covered by the permit; however a permit does not guarantee that a bay will be available.
