Research

DML provides a combination of theoretical knowledge, technical expertise and creative talent.

DML brings high quality expertise, spanning four schools across two Faculties at Deakin including: School of Communication and Creative Arts, School of Education, School of Information Technology and School of Architecture and Built Environment. We have three research streams led by leading researchers.

IMMERSIVE REALITIES led by Luke Heemsbergen and Stefan Greuter, researches interfaces that enrich human interactions between the digital and the physical that are intuitive and playful and put the active human body at the centre of the experience. Our designs explore new ways of interacting with and through technology, and they support practical applications that are used to train, educate, and entertain diverse end-users.

PARTICIPATORY SCREENS led by Sian Mitchell and Sean Redmond, explores the interactive, dialogical, and participatory nature of new screen technologies. Its researchers start from the premise that film, documentary, animation, television, video installation, archiving, streaming and exhibition practices all act as vehicles for understanding everyday life, cultures and sensorial experiences, for challenging convention, and for advancing social inclusion. Research team members undertake empirical research, develop participatory, co-creative community projects, and produce intelligent screen works that seek to enhance our understanding of the ways in which new screen technologies can help us re-examine our past and shape the poetics and politics of contemporary Australia and its global and transnational relationships.

VIRTUAL PRODUCTION led by Simeon Taylor and Russell Kennedy, focuses on new production workflows and screen experiences using a leading-edge LED-volume based filming technique that seamlessly combines physical and virtual elements and gaming software. Backed by a significant University investment, and the establishment of a new LED-based VP facility in partnership with Dreamscreen Australia, DML is working to position Deakin University internationally as a leader in digital entertainment design and commercial VP. This partnership seeks to provide impactful and commercially valuable research, education, training, and infrastructure that transform Australia’s creative industries. The Virtual Production research area investigates the transformation, including the changing workflow practices required for volume screen production.
