Deakin University is working with community organisations in a new program that will enable the groups to offer extra support to people in our LGBTIQ+ community.

Grants of up to $5,000 are open to local not-for-profit groups and community organisations in Melbourne's east, Geelong and Warrnambool, where Deakin has campuses. Projects must be community-based and enhance the inclusion and wellbeing of LGBTIQ+ community members.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Iain Martin said Deakin valued its rich and diverse community of students and staff. "The entire community benefits when we embrace diversity and the value that people from all walks of life and backgrounds bring and the perspectives they offer," Professor Martin said.

"We know members of our community who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer or questioning their gender or sexuality face unique challenges in our community.

"At Deakin we are committed to supporting everyone to reach their potential and contribute to the community and we offer supportive programs and environments to all our students and staff regardless of their background, sexuality, race or gender.

"Our staff and students tell us they feel welcome and included at our campuses but once they walk out of our gates we want this feeling of inclusivity to continue. These grants will help build stronger communities similar to the environment we have built at Deakin."

Applications close Monday 30 September 2019. For more information on the grants, visit: www.deakin.edu.au/lgbtiq or email lgbtiq@deakin.edu.au
