Engineering student excellence awards a virtual celebration

This year, due to COVID-19 restrictions, Deakin University School of Engineering had to take its annual student excellence awards online.
Held on Thursday 4 June and hosted via Zoom, 52 people tuned in for the awards presentation, including sponsors, recipients, family members and school staff.
Six awards to seven recipients were announced during the event, with two students meeting the criteria for the Steel Reinforcement Institute of Australia Award.
Professor Aman Maung Than Oo, Head of the School of Engineering, was the MC for the awards and welcomed all the participants.
‘As Head of the School of Engineering, this is one of the events I really look forward to, where we acknowledge and celebrate the success of our students and recognise the important support of our industry partners,’ Professor Oo says.
‘I know this is a difficult time for all of us and I am very pleased to acknowledge the contributions of our industry partners for making this event a success during this challenging time.
‘I would also like to acknowledge all my Deakin Engineering colleagues who have supported our students and guided them to achieve their outstanding results.’
Hosting the awards online did have one advantage – friends and family could log in from a distance. Award recipient Farwa Rizvi had family members log in to the ceremony from around the world to join in the celebrations.
