New chapter for IEEE Industry Applications Society

Members of Deakin University’s School of Engineering have been instrumental in the formation of a Victorian chapter of an international professional organisation.

Dr Enamul Haque, Senior Lecturer in Electrical Engineering at Deakin, is the founding chair of the new Victorian IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS) Chapter.

IEEE, which stands for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, describes itself as the world’s largest technical professional organisation ‘dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity’. The Industry Applications Society (IAS) is one of its largest special interest societies.

Dr Haque says the establishment of a Victorian chapter will provide a common platform for members to share and gather knowledge on recent industry practices and to access workshops and seminars on contemporary industry issues. It will also provide a platform for industry and academic members to come together, with the potential to increase collaborations.

Working with Dr Haque to establish the Victorian chapter are School of Engineering colleagues Dr Sajeeb Saha, Dr Shama Islam, Dr Apel Mahmud, Dr Taufiqul Arif, Associate Professor Aman Maung Than Oo, Mr Van Thanh Huynh, Dr Mehdi Seyedmahmoudian, Dr Ameen Gargoom, Dr Md Shihanur Rahman and Dr Ahmad Tavakoli. Dr Nishad Mendis from DNV GL and colleagues from RMIT University, La Trobe University and the University of Tasmania are also involved.

It has been a busy year for IEEE involvement at Deakin, with the establishment earlier this year of a Deakin IEEE IAS Student Branch Chapter.
