Biography summary
Ali has completed his bachelor, master and doctorate degrees in Mechanical Engineering.
Research:
Ali's research is related to automotive engineering (engine/vehicle performance and emisssions, alternative fuels, etc.) and air quality (modelling and measurement). Ali did his PhD on engine emissions and performance with alternative fuels at Queensland University of technology (QUT) designing driving cycles for emissions evaluation under different conditions. He was actively involved in engine performance and emissions related experimental campaigns. Ali worked at Ford Motor Company as an RDE/PEMS engineer. During his time at Ford, he developed and implemented new Portable Emission Measuring Systems (PEMS) and Real Driving Emissions (RDE) legislation (as a part of Euro 6.2 WLTP) into the laboratory infrastructure. PEMS/RDE emissions testing and development, and WLTC/RDE certification tests including witnessed testing with government & certification bodies. He also conducted Euro 3, 4, 5 and 6 certification tests in the laboratory, supported and liaised with internal and external customers to assist with the certification testing program requirements/timing, completed the reporting of all test and relevant data ensuring compliance with legislative requirements and the NATA ISO17025 Quality system. He is an expert in engine performance and vehicle testing with an extensive number of relevant publications and delivered projects within the university and automotive industry. Ali has also been successful in securing competitive research grants in collaboration with Deakin colleagues and other collaborators, such as an industry grant on "Investigation into suitable additives for a universal tractor oil based on super high oleic safflower oil" and "fuel cell R&D platform project proposal (Hycel)".
Teaching:
In 2019, Ali started working at Deakin University as a lecturer in Mechanical Engineering being the unit chair of undergrad and postgrad units. Ali has been teaching for more than 15 years, initially teaching and tutoring high-school and undergrad students. He has attended numerous teaching and learning professional development programs. Ali has been an Associate Fellow of The Higher Education Academy (AFHEA) since 2016 and has completed the Graduate certificate in Higher Education Learning & Teaching course at Deakin. His extensive teaching experience has afforded him the experience and confidence to make a significant contribution to teaching and learning in the School of Engineering from the beginning of his appointment. He has demonstrated scholarly learning and teaching across undergrad and postgrad units including on-campus and Cloud modes.
Research interests
Ali's primary research areas are in internal combustion engines, vehicles and emissions with a practical focus on industry issues that impact on society. His vision for research is focussed on improving air quality, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, reducing reliance on fossil fuels, developing sustainable fuel sources, and raising awareness about toxic vehicle emissions through working on:
- On-road vehicle testing (RDE & PEMS)
- Engine emissions and performance
- Emissions regulations (Euro 1-6, WLTP, Euro 7,...)
- Sub-23 nm particles and NO2 emissions
- Transient operation and drive cycles
- Cold-start engine/vehicle operation
- Alternative fuels (biofuel, biodiesel, oxygenated additives,...)
- Hydrogen combustion
- Exergy analysis
- Vehicle/engine emissions and performance modeling
- Combustion analysis
- Air quality modeling and measurement
Teaching interests
Ali is an innovative educator that sets challenging but relevant content to push students to be better prepared for the workplace. His teaching philosophy has always been to establish a bridge between theoretical engineering concepts and their practical real-life applications. He helps students to learn how to relate and apply the engineering theories to solve real-world problems, and how to critically analyse the viability of the solutions. In order to make students industry-ready, he strongly advocates the project based learning approach where a student can learn in a team environment through applying engineering theories in industry-related problems while appreciating their teammate’s views and opinions. He is committed to Deakin’s values and culture, and use reflective practice to influence self-realisation of good practice in teaching, and its integration and application to enhance learning.
