Biography summary
Research:
Ali Zolfagharian is among the 2% top cited scientists listed by Stanford University and Elsevier for successive years (in 2022 and 2021), the Alfred Deakin Medallist for Best Doctoral Thesis (2019), and the Alfred Deakin Postdoctoral Fellowship Awardee (2018). He is co-founder of the 4D Printing Society and co-editor of Smart Materials in Additive Manufacturing V1 and V2 book series published by Elsevier while being a senior lecturer in the School of Engineering, Deakin University, Australia, where he established the 4D Printing and Robotic Materials lab in 2018. He has thus far received more than A$200K research funds leading to successful outputs in the field of 3D and 4D printing of smart robotic materials, including 114 journal articles, 15 special issues, 7 book chapters, and 5 books. He is currently on the editorial board of Designs, Smart Materials in Manufacturing, and Materials Research Express.

Teaching:
Dr. Zolfagharian has been involved in teaching 10 units in Mechanical and Mechatronics at undergraduate and graduate levels in the School of Engineering at Deakin University since joining in 2016. He has supervised 68 postgraduate and undergraduate students on multidisciplinary projects in a project-based teaching and learning environment based on computational thinking approaches.
Research interests
Ali Zolfagharian has started the incorporation of 3D/4D/bio printing into soft robots and auxetic materials as the pioneer research group in the 4D Printing and Robotic Materials Lab at Deakin University, Australia since 2016. His research addresses the challenges associated with 3D/4D printing technology and soft robotics with a wide range of applications in various sectors. His focus on 3D/4D printing projects is on the fabrication of soft robots and vibration analysis of smart materials and structures, including shape memory materials, for safe human-machine interactions, wearable electronics, and medical devices.
