Biography

Dr Antonina Mikocka-Walus is Associate Professor in the School of Psychology and the Faculty of Health HDR Coordinator. She is a psychologist with expertise in clinical health psychology, behavioural medicine and psychosomatic medicine. Her particular expertise is in psychogastroenterology. She graduated in psychology from the University of Warsaw, International Political and Economic Relations from Warsaw School of Economics and Sciences Politiques de Paris, and medicine from the University of Adelaide. After completing her doctorate, she held a postdoctoral position in epidemiology and neuropsychology at Monash University. She later held senior roles at the University of South Australia and the University of York in the UK. She started her appointment at Deakin University in October 2016.

Knowledge areas

Antonina specialises in Psycho-gastroenterology, an exciting field of Behavioural Medicine, where she investigates the links between the brain and the gut. She is particularly interested in conducting trials of psychological and psychiatric interventions to modify disease activity in chronic gastrointestinal conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome. She also conducts observational studies and systematic reviews on the relationship between anxiety, depression and disease activity in the context of gastroenterology.
