Dr Birgit Muskat is a Senior Research Fellow in Deakin Business School. Birgit's research interests include the overlapping areas of entrepreneurship, innovation, knowledge transfer behaviour, and service experiences with a contextual emphasis on SMEs, NPOs in the service sector, particularly, tourism, hospitality and events.

She completed her PhD from the University of Trier, Germany. Prior to joining Deakin University, Birgit was a professor for Entrepreneurship and Tourism, at MCI Innsbruck, an AACSB-accredited Business School in the Austrian Alps, and worked as an Assistant Professor at the University of Canberra.

Her research has been published in high-quality outlets, further, she successfully secured international grant funding, and has a track record of successful supervision of 42 higher degree research students, across Europe, Australia and Singapore. She serves on the Editorial Board of Journal of Travel Research (A*-ranked), Event Management Journal (A-ranked), Journal of Vacation Marketing (A-ranked).

Birgit was awarded the Vice Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence in 2013, and the Dean’s Award for Research Impact in 2013 – both from the University of Canberra. In 2016, she was a visiting teaching professor at Free University of Bolzano/Bozen, Italy: at present, she is also a visiting professor at the University of Bamberg, Germany.
