Biography
Professor Charles Abraham is an applied health and social and psychologist specialising translational health research. He employs a range of quantitative, qualitative and review methods to investigate behaviour-change challenges. His research focuses on the design, implementation, and evaluation of behaviour-change interventions, including those using digital and group-based components. Areas of application include preventive behaviour patterns (e.g., diet, physical activity and alcohol use), health service usage (e.g., increasing engagement with services, including blood donation), management of long-term illnesses (e.g., diabetes, heart failure and persistent pain), and a range of other behavioural patterns, relevant to individual and public health. Projects on which he is a named investigator have been funded for more than Au $47 and his papers are highly cited. He has led, and collaborated on, many multidisciplinary, cross-institutional and international research projects and my research has had practice and policy impact. He has held scientific advisor positions with the UK Department of Health, the UK National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the UK House of Lords.He was one of 7 psychologists included in a list of the leading 100 practising scientists in the UK (UK Science Council in 2014).

Professor Charles Abrahams' research focuses on:
1. Describing and measuring modifiable processes/mechanisms that regulate behaviour patterns, including explicit and implicit cognitions (e.g., attitudes), affective responses and social influences;
2. Developing evidence-based, behaviour-change interventions that apply precisely-defined change techniques to disrupt behaviour patterns and/or establish new behaviour patterns;
3. Linking change techniques to specified mechanisms of psychological change;
4. Designing, and co-designing, feasible, acceptable and sustainable interventions in context;
5. In particular, developing and testing digital and group-based interventions or intervention components;
6. Conducting evaluations, including process evaluations, of behaviour-change interventions.
Professor Abraham employs a range of research methods including experiments (e.g. random controlled trials), multivariate modelling of longitudinal survey data, systematic reviews (including meta-analyses), behavioural observation, traditional (quantitative) content analysis and qualitative analysis of interview and group data (including thematic analysis and grounded theory).
He uses an Intervention-Mapping-based, ten-task approach to intervention design and evaluation (see Abraham & Denford, 2020, in The Cambridge Handbook of Behaviour Change also on the MCBC website) and I have worked with a wide range of clients and patient and public groups to tailor intervention content to client needs.
His work has addressed a wide range of behaviour-change challenges. For example, recently, (i) school-based sexual health education for young people in South Africa (ongoing), (ii) how best to design interventions to help patients using opioids for persistent pain to reduce use (ongoing), (iii) how best to model and promote alcohol restraint among adolescents (e.g., Zhao et al., 2020), (iv) how best to design sexual health and relationship education in schools (Denford, Abraham et al., 2017), (v) how best promote physical activity among cancer survivors (Sheeran, Abraham et al., 2019).
Professor Abraham is especially interested in applying theory to design and test interactive digital interventions and am a CI on an NHMRC Centre for Research Excellence focusing on such development. I am also interested in the use of small-groups to generate behaviour change and, with one of my PhD students (Alexandra Borek), have developed a new framework for designing such interventions (the MAGI framework).
He has many international collaborators and regularly contribute to international conferences. He has delivered 20 keynote lectures, most recently to the 15th International Congress of Behavioral Medicine, Santiago Chile, in November 2018. He also delivered an online workshop to the Australasian Society of Lifestyle Medicine, in December 2020 (and previously in 2018).
