Biography

Dr Usma-Mansfield (PhD) is Lecturer in Engineering Design at the School of Engineering at Deakin University Australia. Clara currently supports Product Development and Creative Engineering within the School of Engineering, and she performs collaborative research partnering with diverse academic, industry and government-based teams. Her expertise covers systematic R&D, creative engineering, systems thinking, product innovation, sports engineering, user-centred design, assistive technology and additive manufacturing in applications at the intersection of technology, design, artefacts, and people.

Clara received a B.Eng. (Honours) in Product Design Engineering from Swinburne University in 2007 and a PhD degree investigating systems thinking approach to user-centric design and mechanical performance to optimise assistive technology in elite sports. Throughout her doctoral studies, Clara provided performance relationships between various levels of athletic ability and the ergonomics and biomechanical features of athlete's chairs to inform equipment design and customisation. Clara collaborated with the Australian Wheelchair Rugby Squad in preparation for the 2012 London Paralympics, where they achieved Australia's first Paralympic gold medal in wheelchair rugby. Clara completed her PhD within the School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at RMIT University, Melbourne, in 2014. She joined Deakin University as a postdoctoral research fellow and was subsequently appointed as Lecturer in Engineering Design in the School of Engineering.
