Biography
Professor Olsson is a Developmental Psychologist with expertise in lifecourse epidemiology and human genetics. He completed his PhD at Melbourne University in Developmental Psychology in 2000. He maintains a longstanding association with the Royal Children's Hospital Melbourne, working there on a competitive fellowship track since 2000.
He was awarded an Alfred Deakin Professorship in 2019 and holds a National Health and Medical Research Council Fellowship (Investigator Grant 2020-2024). He is a former recipient of a Discovery Outstanding Researcher Award (2013-2016) from the Australian Research Council and across his career has secured competitive research grants totalling over $30 million. Professor Olsson's work has been published in journals reflecting the highest quality in the field (Molecular Psychiatry IF=14.49, Nature IF=41.577 and The Lancet IF=39.20). His highest cited paper on adolescent resilience has over 1000 citations.
Professor Olsson is Scientific Director of one of Australia’s longest running longitudinal studies of socio-emotional development, the Australian Temperament Project, which has been repeatedly funded by the ARC and NHMRC since 1983. The ATP has followed ~2000 parents (Generation 1: G1) and their offspring (Generation 2: G2) from infancy to 37 years (16-waves) since 1982. Generation 3 offspring have been followed since 2011 https://www.melbournechildrens.com/atp/
He is Director of the Centre for Social and Early Emotional Development, a Strategic Research Centre administered through the Office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor Research (Deakin Research) and based within the School of Psychology at Deakin University www.deakin.edu.au/seed The Centre for Social and Early Emotional Development (SEED) conducts world-leading research on social development and its origins in early emotional life. The overall objective of SEED is to promote emotional health, from pregnancy through to adulthood and into the next generation. SEED hosts specialist research centres and programs in Wellbeing, Attachment, Addiction and Neurodevelopmental Disorders.
Professor Olsson co-convenes the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute LifeCourse Initiative (https://lifecourse.melbournechildrens.com/). The LifeCourse Initiative aims to lead the national integration of early lifecourse data to create an unparalleled resource for informing practice and policy – a resource that will enhance the capacity of the clinical and medical research community to inform Government and the healthcare sector about the best timing and targeting of interventions that prevent disease and disorder, enhance treatment of disease and disorder, and promote wellbeing.
He is National Convenor of the Australian Research Alliance for Children and Youth (ARACY) Longitudinal Studies Network. Life-course studies sit within the Australasian precinct and are some of the most well regarded long term cohort studies in the work. The network includes 35 Australian and New Zealand cohort studies involving over 70,000 participants, spanning 4 decades, and in some cases three generations.
