Biography
Dr David Broadbent is from the UK and completed his PhD at Liverpool John Moores University in 2015. The title of his PhD was 'Conditions of Practice for Perceptual-Cognitive Simulation Training in Sport'. While completing his PhD, David worked part-time for Everton Football Club as a 1st team performance analyst and with the scouting and recruitment team.
In 2015, David took up a position at Brunel University London as a Lecturer in Sport Psychology within the Division of Sport, Health, Exercise Sciences. The focus of David's research is expert performance and skill acquisition in a variety of domains (sport, driving, cycling), with a particular focus on perceptual-cognitive skills and situation awareness. In his time at Brunel, David supervised multiple HDR students and a wide range of honours and masters student projects. He was also part of multiple funded projects from organisations such as the Badminton World Federation and the Department for Transport.
David Joined Deakin University in 2022 as a Lecturer in Sport Coaching within the School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences and continues his research on anticipation and decision making in sport and on hazard perception and situation awareness in cycling and driving.
Read more on David's profileResearch interests
Dr David Broadbent's main research interest is in the area of expert performance and skill acquisition across a range of domains, such as sport and transportation (e.g., driving/cycling). David has a particular interest in the perceptual-cognitive skills underpinning anticipation and decision making skills, and the factors that can impact these processes, such as pressure and physical and mental load. David is also interested in how to train perceptual-cognitive skills and the application of skill acquisition principles to facilitate this. For example, David was involved in a project that used an immersive gamified intervention to enhance the hazard perception skills and situation awareness of children cyclists. David uses a variety of measures and techniques as part of his research, such as eye-tracking technology, video simulations, virtual/immersive reality, performance analysis, neuroscientific measures (e.g. functional near-infrared spectroscopy [fNIRS]), and behavioural responses (e.g. decision time).
