Biography

Guangyan Huang currently is an Associate Professor at the School of Information Technology, Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment, Deakin University. A/Prof Huang is an independent leading researcher with a fast-increasing international reputation in the fields of Artificial Intelligence, Pattern Recognition, Image Processing and Data Mining. She has made significant breakthroughs in stream pattern mining, video-based soft sensing and emerging topic discovery (by short text mining) that have opened new directions for intelligent robotics in wide applications, such as aquaculture and healthcare. She has three ARC projects in these fields; she was the recipient of an ARC DECRA fellowship (DE140100387) and has been awarded two Discovery Projects - DP190100587 (sole CI) and DP140100841. She was awarded a PhD degree in Computer Science from Victoria University in 2012. Before she joined Deakin, she was a senior lecturer (2014) and research fellow (2012-2013) in VU. She is a PhD Principal supervisor. She is an IEEE Senior member.

A/Prof Huang has extensive research experience and has 130+ publications mainly in the areas of stream pattern mining, anomaly recognition, clustering/unsupervised learning, image/video processing, facial expression recognition, video surveillance, short text mining, emerging topic discovery, trajectory pattern mining, fuzzy computation, IoT/sensor networks and software testing.

She also has 5 years' research experiences in Chinese Academy of Sciences. She was a research assistant from 2003 to 2007 in the Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. She worked as an assistant professor in the Institute of Software, Chinese Academy of Sciences from 2007 to 2009. Between June 2006 and Dec. 2006, she was a visiting researcher at Platforms and Devices Centre in Microsoft Research Asia.

She is active in academic community. She has served as Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Emerging Topic in Computational Intelligence since 2023, PC Member for SIGKDD'2022-2023, PAKDD'2020-2023, IEEE SCC'2016 etc, and Publication Chair of WI-IAT'2020-2021, WISE'2012-2013, HIS'2012-2013 etc. She achieved APWeb'2012 Best Local Arrangement Chair Award and HIS'2012 Best Workshop Chair Award. She was Assistant Editor for Health Information Science and Systems Journal from 2012 to 2014 and helped launch the first issue in Dec. 2012.
