Biography
Associate Professor Jenny Veitch is a researcher within the Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition (IPAN), School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences.
Her research aims to understand how aspects of the neighbourhood built environment may influence physical activity across the lifespan. She has a particular research interest in the role of parks and public open spaces and how features of parks may be associated with visitation and park-based physical activity.
Associate Professor Veitch has previously been supported by a National Heart Foundation of Australia Future Leader Fellowship, a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Early Career Fellowship, a National Heart Foundation of Australia Postdoctoral Research Fellowship, and a National Heart Foundation of Australia Postgraduate Research Scholarship.
She led an ARC Discovery Project (ProjectPARK) that identified the most important characteristics of parks to increase park visitation, park-based physical activity and social connectedness among children, adolescents and older adults (2017-2020).
She also led an ARC Linkage Grant. This three year natural experiment study (REVAMP) examined the impact of park renewal on park use and park-based physical activity (2013-2016).
A/Prof Veitch is currently the Deputy Chair of the Low-Risk Ethics Committee for the Faculty of Health (HEAG-H). She is also Academic Lead of Stakeholder Engagement in IPAN and a member of IPAN’s Consumer Network working group. She is also Co-Chair of the World Urban Parks, 'Children play and nature committee'.
She was a member of the consultation group for Deakin’s Physical Activity Action Group, for the Health Promotion Strategy (2021-22) and was a member of the Faculty of Health, pACE (Academic Careers Equability) committee (2017-22).
She was invited to present at the Victorian Parliament Public Hearing for the Inquiry into Environmental Infrastructure for Growing Populations (2021) and was commissioned by the World Health Organisation as senior author to develop policy actions on the built environment for the current Global Action Plan on Physical Activity 2018–30 (included attendance at WHO, Geneva, 2016).

I have sustained partnerships with industry, government and NGOs who have contributed funding to my research. I have delivered >25 invited presentations to practitioners and policy makers and my research has informed the park planning across Victoria (e.g., local council open space strategy plans and master plans).
In 2016, I coordinated a “Parks for Healthy Communities” forum that bought together more than 55 practitioners, policy makers, planners and researchers to discuss current research, opportunities for collaboration between researchers and practitioners, and solutions for putting the latest evidence into practice.
I regularly consult with Parks Victoria and local government organisations regarding aspects of park design. .
