Biography
Luke O’Dell is an Associate Professor in the Institute for Frontier Materials at Deakin University. He obtained his PhD at the University of Warwick, UK, in 2007, carried out post-doctoral research in solid-state NMR with Professor Mark Smith (Warwick) and Professor Robert Schurko (University of Winsdor, Ontario, Canada), and also worked as a Research Associate in the Steacie Institute for Molecular Sciences (NRC Canada). His research focuses on the development and application of magnetic resonance based techniques (including solid-state NMR and MRI) to study structure and dynamics in functional materials, particularly novel ion-conducting electrolytes such as ionic liquids, organic ionic plastic crystals and polymers.

Magnetic resonance is a versatile experimental tool for the molecular scale characterisation of structure and dynamics in materials. I use a variety of magnetic resonance techniques to study a diverse range of materials, including ionic liquids, conducting polymers, plastic crystals, supramolecular complexes, carbon fibres and fossilised amber. I also develop new experimental methods, including operando techniques for studying the processes occurring in functioning energy devices such as thermo-electrochemical cells and batteries.
