Biography

Luke O’Dell is a Senior Lecturer in the Institute for Frontier Materials at Deakin University.  He obtained his PhD at the University of Warwick, UK, in 2007, carried out post-doctoral research in solid-state NMR with Professor Mark Smith (Warwick) and Professor Robert Schurko (University of Winsdor, Ontario, Canada), and also worked as a Research Associate in the Steacie Institute for Molecular Sciences (NRC Canada).  His research focuses on the development and application of solid-state NMR techniques to study structure and dynamics in functional materials, particularly novel ion-conducting electrolytes.

Research interests

Magnetic resonance is a versatile experimental tool for the molecular scale characterisation of structure and dynamics in materials. I use a variety of magnetic resonance techniques to study a diverse range of materials, including ionic liquids, conducting polymers, plastic crystals, supramolecular complexes, carbon fibres and fossilised amber. I also develop new experimental methods, with a particular focus on the nitrogen-14 isotope which is commonly found in materials but can be extremely difficult to study.
