Biography summary

Dr Matthias Weiss is currently a Senior Research Fellow (Advanced Characterisation and Manufacturing of High Strengths Sheet Materials) in the Institute for Frontier materials (IFM).  His qualifications include a Master of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering (Completed with high distinction and best of the year 2002) from the Aachen University of Technology (RWTH Aachen), and a PhD in Material Science (Deakin) in 2007. Over the last 12 years Matthias has established one of the world's largest roll forming research groups that includes Australia`s most advanced roll forming research facility. His group combines analysis of material behaviour at the micro-level with the development of advanced material models, new forming concepts and routines for process monitoring and control (industry 4.0). Matthias has built an international reputation in conventional and flexible roll forming and, at IFM, has established a world`s first flexible forming facility for the prototyping and low volume manufacture of automotive components. His group has hosted two international roll forming research conferences in 2010 and 2018. In 2016 Matthias co-founded Australian start-up FormFlow which has developed a world`s first technology for bending corrugated sheet and recently signed a $1 M/year licence agreement with BlueScope Steel in 2019. Matthias has been part of five successful nationally competitive large research grants, totalling over AUD $4 million in awarded funds. He has published over 80 refereed articles.
