Biography

Dr Nandi Vijayakumar is a research fellow in the School of Psychology at Deakin University, and is Deputy Director of Brain Cognitive Development Lab. She is a developmental scientist interested in normative and atypical trajectories of social and emotional changes during adolescence. Using longitudinal and neuroimaging methods, her research examines risk and resilience factors for the onset of mental health problems, including the role of biological processes (such as puberty and brain development) and social determinants (includsing parenting and peer relationships, as well as adverse childhood experiences).

Projects

Brain development during puberty

Adolescence is a period of critical maturation in the structure and function of brain systems. This project aims to improve our understanding of hormonal changes during puberty that shape brain maturation. In particular, it examines whether certain patterns of biological development increase risk for the onset of mental health problems during puberty.

Environmental influences on the developing brain

Mulitple levels of the social environment, such as the family unit, peer groups (including online friends), schools and neighbourhoods, have a significant impact on the developing adolescent. This project aims to identify the environmental influences that act as risk and protective factors for typical patterns of brain maturation. It also examines the specific timing of their influence, so we can better target interventions to support healthy development.
