Research interests
Dr.Gharaie recieved his Master degree in Advanced Manufacturing Technology, and Ph.D. in Mechanical engineering from Swinburne University of Technology, and undertook postdoctoral training at Weill Cornell medicine, NY, USA. During this time, he collaborated with leading medical device companies to develop cardiac devices.
Dr Gharaie’s primary research focus is on the development and evaluation of cardiovascular devices, and understanding the mechanism, treatment, and detection of cardiovascular disease. Some of his ongoing research projects include:
• Research associated with development of stents to treat a bifurcation lesion and understanding of the abnormal flow dynamics around bifurcated areas.
• Fluid dynamics and mechanics of blood flow studied in the heart, heart valves, and blood vessels using experimental, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approaches. Development of novel techniques that use these biomechanical indices for early detection of disease progression and to guide therapeutic intervention.
• Design and evaluation of non-blood contact mechanical circulatory support.
• Research associated with development of a novel polymeric mitral valve for transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR).
