Biography

Dr Seyedin is a Research Fellow at the Institute for Frontier Materials (IFM), Deakin University. He joined IFM in May 2014 as an Associate Research Fellow and then received the Alfred Deakin Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Jan 2017. During his postdoctoral positions at Deakin, he has developed practical strategies for processing novel atomically thin materials (e.g. graphene, MXene) into advanced multi-functional structures and devices for applications in wearable energy storage and sensing. His research in IFM has led to the development of novel energy storing fibres from MXene nanosheets, which could be knitted into textiles for wearable applications. This work was featured in 2 radio interviews and 16 news outlets such as Sydney Morning Herald and The Age. He was awarded with a PhD (chemistry) from the University of Wollongong (Intelligent Polymer Research Institute, IPRI) in December 2014 under the supervision of Prof Gordon Wallace. During his PhD, he processed various nanomaterials (e.g. graphene, carbon nanotubes, conducting polymers) into fibres that were as stretchy as Lycra and electrically conducting at the same time. He knitted those high-performance functional fibres and achieved smart textiles that could be worn to sense movements of human’s body through “talking” to the wearer using a wireless transmitter. This important achievement marked a breakthrough in wearable body movement monitoring and generated a significant world-wide attention by appearing in 6 news outlets including the ABC News; it also led to an investment ($37k) from an industry partner for scaled-up production. So far, he has published 25 peer-reviewed papers (18 as first author and 3 as corresponding author) in high-ranking multidisciplinary journals such as Advanced Functional Materials (IF=12.12) along with 17 book chapters and has presented in 15 conferences. He has received a wide range of competitive research fellowships and grants including the Alfred Deakin Postdoctoral Research Fellowship, Endeavour Research Fellowship, 5 research grants, 1 industry grant, and 5 travel awards (total ~$320k). He is also the recipient of 13 academic, research, and presentation awards including the Young Scientist Medal (2016) from the International Association of Advanced Materials. He is currently supervising 2 PhD candidates and has supervised 2 Research Assistants and 1 summer scholarship student in the past. He has also participated in the supervision of 3 visiting postgraduate candidates.
