Overview
Interview with Vicki Baldwin
Tell us about your current role – what does a typical day look like for you?
I am a year 4 classroom teacher and a typical day involves teaching my 18 beautiful students a variety of topics including Maths, Literacy, Mindfulness and Inquiry.
What is the best/most rewarding part of your job?
I love being involved in our sporting programs as well as seeing the progression from students. Most rewarding is our Round Squares Projects and a recent trip to India.
What were some of the memorable experiences you had at Deakin? i.e. social, academic, intellectual.
The most memorable were the PE events. The outdoor education camps, major projects, Football Coaching (with Gary Lyon), and Bronze Medallion training.
Did you learn anything from your Deakin studies to take directly to the workforce?
I specifically remember having to do lesion plans (as much as I hated them). I find them so valuable when it comes to differentiating my teaching.
Can you give a specific example of a project or collaboration that you have been involved in with Deakin and how this has impacted your career to date? (If applicable)
I think a lot of our projects were working in collaboration with our team. I think this has helped me be a better team member in the workplace. It taught me lifelong skills to be able to work in a school (team) environment.
What are your career highlights?
Getting my dream job at Ivanhoe Grammar.
Is there anything else you’d like to add about Deakin that we haven’t covered?
I often refer to my university days as the best days of my life. I made lifelong, beautiful friends and am doing something that I love.
