Our impact themes

At Deakin, we aim to focus all philanthropic activities on where our work will make the biggest impact. Our five interconnected themes are important to society, reflect the greatest and most urgent challenges to our shared world, and align with our strengths in education and research across all our disciplines.

Advancing society, culture and the economy

Advancing society, culture and the economy

Deakin researchers are working to create an effective education system, an inclusive economic system and an understanding of intercultural relations in politics. Strong economic development fosters cultural autonomy, which is why our researchers are driving engagement with Australia’s rich cultural heritage.

Institute for Frontier Materials (IFM)

The Institute for Frontier Materials (IFM) aims to be a catalyst for the successful transformation to a circular economy. IFM does this through focusing on the re-design of materials to facilitate re-purposing, recycling and re-use, while harnessing the original material value as it evolves through multiple lives. The Institute creates novel, renewable materials and by-products, reducing our dependency on the world’s finite resources.

Blue Carbon Lab

Scientists at Deakin's Blue Carbon Lab are at the forefront of global efforts to advance ‘blue carbon’ science and projects. Australia has more blue carbon ecosystems than anywhere else in the world. These ecosystems are up to 50 times more effective than rainforests at storing carbon and play a key role in mitigating climate change through preventing greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere. Blue Carbon Lab offers innovative solutions to mitigate climate change. You can also be part of the solution by supporting our cutting-edge wetland research.
