Department of Economics

The Department of Economics is ranked in the top 200 in the world.* The department runs a PhD program with a significant coursework component, hosts several workshops and conferences every year, and enjoys a vibrant and stimulative research environment.

Studying economics at Deakin

Our teaching programs follow best practice in economics education, and include an economics major, economics minor, sustainability and development major, as well as microcredentials and postgraduate offerings that tap into the latest trends in the labour market.

Research strengths and specialisations

We have particular research strengths in economic theory, applied economics, and econometrics, and have recently been rated 'above the world standard' by the Australian Federal Government. Our areas of expertise lie in:

Grant success

The department has been successful in obtaining nationally and internationally competitive grants such as ARC Discovery grants, the Bush Fire and Natural Hazard Cooperative Research Centre and the US Department of Agriculture. Since 2011, more than 90% of our faculty members have published in an A-ranked journal and a further 60% have published in A* journals according to the ABCD journal rankings.

The department has 27 full-time permanent academics as well as five part-time professorial fellows. Its research strengths lie in economic theory, applied economics, and econometrics. Members of the department have published in leading scholarly journals such as:
