Higher degrees by research with us

We welcome applications from prospective PhD and master's by research students interested in collaborating with us. Our areas of research and interdisciplinary strength span media, communication and literary studies, and the creative, digital and performing arts.

Our higher degree by research (HDR) students join a community of scholars and artists passionate about extending the boundaries of research through scholarly and creative investigations.

Flexible research formats

As part of our mission to uphold the highest standards in HDR training for professional development, we offer a range of candidature models and thesis formats flexible to the requirements of cutting-edge projects, and adaptable to the needs of innovative collaborations with industry and community partners. Possible thesis formats include:

  • thesis by monograph structure
  • thesis by prior or in-candidature publication
  • creative work plus exegesis
  • folio format.

Expert supervision

Potential HDR projects within the School of Communication and Creative Arts (SCCA) are typically matched to supervision panels of two academics supported by a network of resources across the school, faculty and university.

As part of Deakin University’s PhD Xtra program, you'll be supported in your research through coursework and additional program content options designed to extend your supervision experience and expand your expertise base.

You can expect to be working closely with your supervisors and other research teams, interweaving your research with theirs through your contributions to publications, grant applications and creative outputs.

Shape our research journey and be shaped by it

At the SCCA we pride ourselves on offering a pioneering HDR experience designed for the production of world-class projects.

A PhD or master's by research degree from Deakin reflects the benefits of expert, dedicated supervision combined with innovative additional program features that are adapted to the distinctive nature of your project.

We want to hear about your ideas for sole researcher, collaborative or team-oriented projects – including proposals for HDR theses involving industry or community partnerships – suited to the adventurous, interdisciplinary and inquisitive research agenda of the SCCA.
