The Bachelor of Nursing (Clinical Leadership) is the only undergraduate degree of its kind in Victoria, giving you individualised mentoring in clinical leadership. Focusing on clinical nursing leadership and management, research, and education, you will graduate with confidence in your ability to successfully step into the role of a registered nurse.

Thanks to our extensive clinical partnership network with many of Victoria’s major healthcare providers, this course is designed to ensure you gain the leadership knowledge and hands-on skills that are most relevant to employers in the healthcare sector.
As part of your core leadership units, you will participate in mentored learning experiences, providing you with the opportunity to observe and work with:

Throughout your course, you will benefit from access to our purpose-built Clinical Simulation Centre, gaining familiarity with the facilities and equipment to develop your practical skills. From the first trimester in the first year of your degree, clinical placements offer the opportunity to develop and consolidate your learning, and are undertaken in various metropolitan, regional and rural health care settings under the supervision of registered nurses.
You will experience being part of a multidisciplinary health care team and gain clinical experience in a variety of settings, including acute/sub-acute care, medical and surgical care, aged care, rehabilitation, community nursing and mental health nursing.
To complete the Bachelor of Nursing (Clinical Leadership) students must attain 24 credit points. Units (think of units as 'subjects') may be worth 1 or 2 credit points - click on each unit to check its credit point value in the course structure below. Students study 4 credit points per trimester and usually undertake two trimesters each year. All units are core units (these are compulsory).
All commencing Faculty of Health Undergraduate and Postgraduate course work students are required to complete HAI010 Academic Integrity in their first trimester of study (0 credit point compulsory unit).

Mandatory student checks
In accordance with Department of Human Services policy, all students are required to undertake a National Police Record Check prior to clinical placements in each calendar year of their course.
In accordance with the Department of Justice 2007, Working with Children Act 2005, amended 2017, all students are required to undertake a Working with Children Check at the commencement of their course. Students who fail to obtain a Police Record Check and a Working with Children Check prior to the commencement of clinical placement will not be able to undertake clinical placement and this will impede progress in the course.
Students are also required to declare their immunisation status to satisfy the requirements of health organisations where they will be undertaking their clinical learning experience. A health organisation may refuse to accept a student for placement if the student’s immunisation status is not satisfactory to the health organisation.
Essential knowledge, skills and capabilities are required to undertake and successfully complete the undergraduate nursing and midwifery courses and to practice safely as a registered nurse and/or midwife. As a student in the Faculty of Health you can expect to participate in a range of teaching activities each week. This may include classes, seminars, practicals and on-line interaction. You can refer to the individual unit details in the course structure for more information. You will also need to study and complete assessment tasks in your own time. There is an expectation that you will be available to undertake clinical placements outside of trimester dates. All expenses associated with clinical placements are your responsibility.
The course involves compulsory 20 weeks of clinical placement in hospitals and community health centres in metropolitan, rural and regional areas.

Clinical placements are conducted throughout your course beginning in Trimester 1 of your first year. This early exposure to the clinical environment gives you extensive opportunities to develop clinical skills under the supervision of registered nurses and enables you to experience being part of a multidisciplinary health care team. You will gain clinical experience in a variety of settings including acute/sub-acute care, medical and surgical care, aged care, rehabilitation, community nursing and mental health nursing. These experiences may be undertaken in hospitals and community health care centres in metropolitan, rural and regional areas.
Deakin University offers admission to undergraduate courses through a number of Admission categories.
In all categories of admission, selection is based primarily on academic merit as indicated by an applicant's previous academic record.
Entry will be based on performance in:
- Senior Secondary Certificate of Education with ATAR of at least 50 or equivalent
- Certificate IV in a related discipline
- Diploma in any discipline or 50% completion of Diploma in a related discipline
- Successful completion of relevant study – equivalent to at least two Deakin University units – at an accredited higher education institution
- Evidence of academic capability judged to be equivalent, including Foundation program approved by Faculty Board, or relevant work or life experience.

Applicants should have successfully completed a Senior Secondary Certificate of Education, including Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in English other than EAL.

Recognition of prior learning
The University aims to provide students with as much credit as possible for approved prior study or informal learning which exceeds the normal entrance requirements for the course and is within the constraints of the course regulations. Students are required to complete a minimum of one-third of the course at Deakin University, or four credit points, whichever is the greater.

The tuition fees you pay will depend on the units you choose to study as each unit has its own costs. The 'Estimated tuition fee' is provided as a guide only based on a typical enrolment of students undertaking the first year of this course. The cost will vary depending on the units you choose, your study load, the time it takes to complete your course and any approved Recognition of Prior Learning you have.
Each unit you enrol in has a credit point value. The 'Estimated tuition fee' is calculated by adding together 8 credit points of a typical combination of units for that course. Eight credit points is used as it represents a typical full-time enrolment load for a year.
