Students enrolled before 2019: Successful completion of MLL110 plus 5 additional Law (MLL) units.Students commencing from 2019: Successful completion of MLL110 and MLL113 plus 5 additional Law (MLL) units.
Students will on average spend 150 hours over the teaching period undertaking the teaching, learning and assessment activities for this unit.
1 x 2 hour class and 1 x 1 hour class and 1 x 1 hour seminar per week
1 x 2 hour class (recordings provided) and 1 x 1 hour class (recordings provided) and 1 x 1 hour online seminar per week
The unit aims to provide students with an introduction to the principles of constitutional law at the state and federal levels, an elaborate study of the Commonwealth Parliament's powers and federalism and the interrelationship between jurisdiction and judicial review and questions of Commonwealth - state relationships.
These are the Learning Outcomes (ULO) for this UnitAt the completion of this Unit, successful students can:
ULO1
Understand the constitutional principles of federalism, separation of powers, responsible government and the Rule of Law.
GLO1: Discipline-specific knowledge and capabilities
ULO2
Explain the Commonwealth Parliament’s law-making powers.
ULO3
Explain what judicial review entails and describe its constitutional foundations.
ULO4
Identify the questions and conflicts that arise between the Commonwealth and the States in the legislative, executive and judicial spheres.
ULO5
Explain the nature, scope and significance of express and implied rights under the Australian Constitution.
ULO6
Analyse, evaluate and synthesise the discipline knowledge noted above.
