Content

The unit offers the opportunity to discuss in depth a wide range of literary and multi-media historical fiction texts (for example novels, film, television, and video-games) in the context of recent literary and historiographical debates. We will explore the genre of historical fiction and its boundaries. Where does history stop and fiction begin? How do historical fictions for young people differ from those aimed at adult audiences? How ‘historical’ are science fiction and fantasy? Students will be encouraged to investigate these questions and more through writing critical and theoretical essays and/or creative work. Texts and media may vary from year to year.
