A strong understanding of computer networks is fundamental for cyber security. This unit will give students the deep understanding they need of how network protocols across the stack operate, while providing them with the programming and technical skills needed to analyse them. This will provide the focused technical foundation they need to be successful in the course.
Explain the layers of abstraction involved in the network stack, and how these enable data to flow between machines within a network.
GLO1: Discipline-specific knowledge and capabilities
ULO2
Implement programs that interact with networks at different levels with the network stack to implement and analyse common protocols.
ULO3
Analyse network protocols to identify security limitations and explain the root cause of each limitation and strategies to mitigate.
GLO4: Critical thinking
ULO4
Use tools to investigate networking errors and security issues, and analyse results obtained in order to recommend solutions.
GLO3: Digital literacyGLO5: Problem solving
