Students will on average spend 150-hours over the teaching period undertaking the teaching, learning and assessment activities for this unit.

The online unit has learning resources available in a specific and custom-built site within Cloud Deakin. They are divided into weekly topics each of which incorporate relevant contextual information, links to specific readings and other Cloud-based unit content, activities designed to facilitate critical engagement with the unit content and which encourage students to apply their developing understanding of cultural heritage to professional contexts. Online discussion forums are available and students are encouraged to actively engage with discussion threads, to interact with fellow students and to evaluate and reflect on unit content.

Students enrolled in campus mode have access to the full suite of online resources and discussion areas on the CloudDeakin site. They can fully participate in the online learning environment.

Additionally, they also have an opportunity to attend the campus based program. Unit Chairs create a stimulating and appropriate suite of activities that includes professionals and specialist site visits. It is expected that students enrolled in this mode will attend this program. 

The final campus based program will be posted on CloudDeakin. Check your home page for details. The venue will be Building N. Room 2.07 at the Melbourne Burwood campus. Do not assume that all days start and finish at the Melbourne Burwood Campus. Sessions on each day will normally start at 10 am and conclude by 4.00 pm but some days may have different starting and finishing times. These will be advised in the published program.

In some cases, Cloud (online) students are able to attend the campus based program, but please email the Unit Chair in advance to check.

Scheduled learning activities - campus:

On campus students are required to attend 4-days of intensive classes during the trimester

Scheduled learning activities - cloud:

Online independent and collaborative learning activities equivalent to 1-hour per week, and 4 x 1-hour scheduled seminars per trimester.

Content

There are three main themes:

1. Significance assessment and collection development

  • Assessment of significance of movable cultural heritage and museum acquisitions
  • Ethical and legal implications of moving, acquiring or disposing of an object or collection
  • Theoretical and practical guidance for development of management policies for movable cultural heritage and the development of museum collections

2. Managing Collections: Cataloguing and Documentation

  • Legal documentation, registration and cataloguing of movable cultural heritage and museum objects
  • Records management, identifying and using appropriate information systems
  • Documentation for object management

3. Care and Conservation of Objects

  • Strategies and plans for care of collections and movable cultural heritage
  • Conservator's role
  • Emergency preservation of movable cultural heritage
