Students will on average spend 150-hours over the teaching period undertaking the teaching, learning and assessment activities for this unit.
In Person Attendance Requirements Students who are completing professional experience placements are not required to attend classes or scheduled synchronous sessions during the placement.
Time engaging in learning activities is expected to total a combined equivalent of 8-10 hours per week.
This includes engagement with materials, responses to tasks, independent study and 1 x 2-hour scheduled seminar per non-placement teaching week (approx. 6-9 weeks).

It is highly recommended that you attend scheduled synchronous discussions in CloudDeakin throughout the trimester.
EAL Teachers need to have an in-depth understanding of all systemic aspects of language- lexical, morphological, syntactical, and phonological, and their associated structures and functions. This unit enhances these understandings and also raises awareness of the pedagogical applications of linguistic knowledge. In this unit, students will also develop the ability to assess the spoken and written language abilities of EAL learners at different levels of proficiency and monitor their development through stages.
This unit is tailored specially for VIT registered teachers who seek additional expertise in dealing with non-English speaking background students in mainstream classes.
Understand and outline key issues concerning grammatical structures, and the teaching of grammar

Analyse the structure of written samples produced by learners writing in English as a second language

Appraise linguistic features of texts for teaching purposes, and through teamwork justify their choice for selection to support learners with English as a second language

Analyse pronunciation and discourse features of spoken language produced by a non-native speaker of English
Demonstrate the ability to assess the language ability of ESL/EFL learners at different levels of proficiency, and monitor their development through stages
