This unit is only available to students enrolled in S779.
Students will complete a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) experience either as an IT placement with an external organisation or through project-focused experience at Deakin. These WIL experiences require students to complete between 100 and 160 hours within a 4 to 12 week period. The online learning and assessment activities for the unit will consist of approximately 50 hours and include 2 x 1 hour pre-placement meetings. Students must attend and participate in experience-based activities on scheduled days, as detailed in their agreement/experience outline.
Contact hours will vary based on experience. Some experiences may require additional compulsory orientation events.
This unit focuses on work integrated learning experiences. In addition to workplace related activities, students will spend approximately 50 hours on related learning and assessment activities for the unit.
This will include educator guided online learning activities within the unit site.
Students must contact a student adviser prior to considering enrolment in this unit to obtain an updated course map and ensure they meet the pre-enrolment and course requirements.
Students will be required to complete one of two types of professional Work Integrated Learning (WIL) experiences, either an IT placement experience with an external organisation or a project-focused experience at Deakin.
Students wanting to complete this unit via placement with an external organisation must source and secure a placement opportunity with an appropriate host organisation prior to enrolment and then apply to the SEBE WIL Team for approval. Students who have not secured a placement with an external organisation prior to the start of the trimester will work on projects at Deakin.
In preparation for the WIL experience, all students are required to complete the Placement Preparation Module (PPM) before commencing their WIL experience, and undertake the online teaching, learning and assessment activities for the unit outside of WIL experience hours.
The online teaching, learning and assessment activities for the unit will consist of approximately 50 hours, on top of the 100 to 160 hours of within the WIL experience.
Note also that delays in completing a placement with an external organisation could mean that the course will take longer to complete than the stated duration.
Attendance at the placement may be required outside the trimester dates.
Integrating study and work experience in a systematic way is essential for forging close links between the university education process and the workplace. In this unit, students will undertake professional work experience through placement at an external host or a project-focused experience at Deakin. The exact nature, activities and emphasis in each experience will vary according to the context, resources, and expertise of the work experience host and the qualities, and aspirations of the student. However, this systematic opportunity will provide students with relevant work experience whilst critically reflecting on their course and graduate learning outcomes, and their discipline-specific and generic competencies.
Learning and assessment activities in this unit will help students develop an appreciation for these work-life aspects and make decisions about personal and professional development. Most importantly, it will provide students with relevant evidence when applying for future work.

Following completion of this unit students will be awarded an ungraded pass/ungraded fail only. All assessments must be passed for an ungraded pass to be given for the unit.
The assessment due weeks provided may change. The Unit Chair will clarify the exact assessment requirements, including the due date, at the start of the teaching period.
To be eligible to obtain an ungraded pass in this unit students must demonstrate that they are working to the satisfaction of the host organisation:
a. at the mid placement phase of the professional experience (placement). b. at the end of placement phase of the professional experience (placement). c. in the professional review (industry/supervisor performance evaluation of placement activity), documenting achievement for all skill competency levels, professional code of conduct and project output requirements.
