Content

What is 'theory'? Why use it? How do particular theories develop in conversation with each other? How can they be brought to bear usefully in new contexts? This unit explores these questions and more by offering an introduction to a wide range of theoretical, historical and philosophical perspectives and positions relevant to literature and writing. It asks fundamental questions about the relationship between critical theory, literary analysis, and creative practice. Students will be encouraged to explore a range of influential theoretical concepts and perspectives pertinent to literary studies and creative writing. They will develop an understanding of how theories can be used as frameworks for analysis and creative practice. Topics addressed in this unit may include theories of literature and literary value, power, gender, creativity, and language in historical and contemporary perspectives.
