| In-person attendance requirements: | Students will complete 100 hours of placements over the course of this unit, comprised of 40 hours of client contact, 10 hours of supervision, and at 50 hours of non-contact work related to counselling placement. Students will self-source a placement, guided by the School of Psychology - Professional Placement Officer All placement hours must be completed within Australia, with both the host organisation and student being physically located within Australia. Students must also have a current police check and Working with Children Check, and be willing to comply with any other requirements of the placement organisation. |
Content
This unit provides students with an opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge and practical skills in a supported and supervised counselling setting. The unit is designed to enhance students' self-awareness, professionalism, and ethical practice, and to consolidate and integrate learning from previous counselling units. Through the placement experience, students will develop their skills in communication, empathy, active listening, and counselling interventions, and will learn how to tailor these to the unique needs of individual clients. By successfully completing this unit, students will gain valuable experience as well as the opportunity to connect with professionals in the counselling field, which will support them to gain future employment.
Students will complete 100 hours of counselling practicum, including 40 hours of client contact, 10 hours of supervision, and 50 hours of non-client contact activities related to counselling. As part of their placement, students will participate in regular individual and/or group supervision to support the development of their counselling, ethical and professional skills.

This unit is an ungraded pass/ungraded fail only. All assessments must be passed in order for the unit to be passed.
The assessment due weeks provided may change. The Unit Chair will clarify the exact assessment requirements, including the due date, at the start of the teaching period.
Hurdle requirement
Students must pass all assessments to pass the unit. A second opportunity will be given to students to enable them to demonstrate competency if they do not pass the first submission.
