Research topic

Conventional systems for treatment and coating textiles involve the use of wet processing, in which textiles are dipped padded or sprayed to apply a chemical treatment to the textile. These coatings can be used to apply desired functional properties such as hydrophobicity, hydrophilicity, flame retardancy, odour control and other functionalisations. These methods of applying coatings have drawbacks in that they can provide coatings with poor durability and can generate large volumes of waste effluent.

Plasma is an interesting alternative to conventional coating systems as the coatings can use less chemical, low or no solvent and commonly have very high durability. Currently, the use of plasma treatment for textiles is primarily limited to batch processing systems or low-pressure environments. This research will look to develop atmospheric plasma as an environmentally viable alternative to wet coating methods.

Project aim

The aim of this PhD is to explore atmospheric plasma treatment methods and systems to achieve a stable atmospheric plasma which can be used to primarily treat textiles, but will have applications for use in other major industries including; automotive, metal fabrication and consumer packaging industries.

Implementing atmospheric plasma processes and systems developed during this PhD will assist with development of new and sustainable methods and systems for treatment of textiles, films substrates or other consumer articles. The developed processes and systems have potential to replace traditional processing methods providing more sustainable processing with reduced environmental footprint.

This PhD will be working on an IM-CRC funded project with the textile technology company Xefco.

This scholarship is available over 3 years.

  • Stipend of $27,596 per annum tax exempt (2019 rate)
  • International students only: Tuition fee and overseas health coverage for the duration of 4 years

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible you must:

  • be either a domestic or international candidate
  • meet Deakin's PhD entry requirements
  • be enrolling full time and hold an honours degree (first class) or an equivalent standard master's degree with a substantial research component.
