Career opportunities

Our graduates get jobs. With an international skills shortage in the engineering industry, Deakin graduates are in demand both here in Australia and further abroad. Not only that, employers seek out Deakin graduates for their forward thinking, innovative and entrepreneurial qualities. 

 As a mechatronics engineering graduate, you could be employed as:

  • a biomedical service engineer
  • a control systems engineer
  • an automation engineer
  • an electronic test engineer
  • a robot engineer.


Undergraduate (your first degree)

An undergraduate degree is generally completed between two to four years, depending on the pattern of study and any recognition of prior learning you may have. Associate degrees, bachelor and bachelor with honours are all undergraduate degrees.


Postgraduate (further study)

A postgraduate qualification can be undertaken by students who have already completed an undergraduate degree or possess significant, demonstrable work experience. Postgraduate courses include graduate certificates, graduate diplomas, master’s and PhDs, as well as specialist programs for industry professionals.


Higher Degrees by Research (supervised research)

Research degrees are research based master’s or PhD programs that focus on a single area of expertise. They provide students the opportunity to carry out highly specialised research under expert supervision.

The prototyping labs at Deakin are amazing and fantastic to work in and observe. Turning concepts into applied solutions is exceedingly satisfying.

'Mechatronics draws upon multiple streams of engineering. A heavy focus on prototyping and construction of projects and the various facilities that can be used to produce components on campus make for a unique student experience at Deakin. The project-based subjects are fantastic for developing practical skills and to produce a suitable portfolio for future employers.

I found the staff are all knowledgeable and have vast amounts of experience that they can share. I have discovered an aptitude for leadership during my time at Deakin, using it both in my studies and extracurricular activities. I intend to use these experiences in my future mechatronics career.

Deakin also allowed me the opportunity to take part in the Warman Design and Build Competition, a national robotics competition held annually, which I found very rewarding.'

Centre for Advanced Design in Engineering Training (CADET)

You’ll get hands-on learning from year one in our state-of-the-art facilities at CADET. Students are enabled to explore endless possibilities in digital manufacturing, computer modelling, virtual reality environments, 3D printing and much more.

Industry-based learning (IBL)

IBL involves working full or part time in industry as part of your studies. You can gain valuable experience and be better prepared for employment after graduation, all while gaining credit towards your degree.

Innovative engineering research

Engineering at Deakin is research led, rather than simply research informed. Deakin is a significant leader in a number of engineering-focused research areas, notably manufacturing and materials. Our engineering research themes include sustainable infrastructure, advanced design and manufacturing and health and education.

Deakin's Bachelor of Mechatronics Engineering (Honours) is accredited by Engineers Australia. This accreditation ensures our engineering course meets both national and international standards and gives our degrees international recognition. That means our graduates can practise as professional engineers in many countries around the world.

Leading the way in engineering

Deakin engineering is ranked highly by Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA), a national research evaluation framework. ERA awarded Deakin the highest ranking possible of 5 in the categories of Materials Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering. 

Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical and Electronic Engineering were awarded a ranking of 4 (classed above world standard), highlighting Deakin’s strength in engineering related research. 

Our research excellence helps to inform our teaching curriculum to ensure undergraduate students are aware of the developments that will shape the engineering industries of the future.
