December offer round

Heads up! Want to know what’s different for change of preference in 2019?

Deakin will be participating in the new December offer round. So, if you’re a current Year 12 student in Victoria or Queensland^ you might receive an offer in December, which means you can enrol straightaway in your units for 2020.

It’s important to know that more offers will be made in January 2020 – so don’t rule out a course just because you didn’t receive an offer in December.

IB students and applicants from other states won’t be included in the December offer round due to results being unavailable. However, we’ll reserve places in the January offer rounds, so you won’t be disadvantaged.

If you do receive an offer in December, we recommend you accept it. Remember, you’ll still be eligible to receive additional offers in other rounds for any higher-preferred courses in your preference list.

Submitting your application to VTAC

Applications for Trimester 1 can be made to VTAC.

VTAC course applications are made online at www.vtac.edu.au. Before you start your application you’ll need to create a VTAC account and log in.

  1. Have any required supporting documents and identification on hand.
  2. Start the application by selecting 'course application' in your VTAC account.
  3. Enter your education history.
  4. List your course preferences.
  5. Review your application details and submit.

Use our course finder to discover the courses you could be eligible to apply for based on your ATAR. Please use this as a guide only, as ATARs can change from year to year.

If you’re interested in a particular study area such as law, business, arts or engineering, explore your interest area or search for courses by name. On each course page, you’ll find information such as last year’s ATAR and course entry requirements, professional recognition, career opportunities, course structure, fees and much more.

Understanding entry requirements

Before starting your application, it’s important to read through the entry requirements on the course page. Examples of entry requirements include a specified ATAR, English language requirements, prerequisites and special criteria. If you can tick off each entry requirement, you can confidently move onto the next stage of preparing your application.

If you don’t meet the entry requirements, you won’t be eligible to apply for the course. But that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s out of reach. You still may be able to enter the course through an alternate pathway.

Supporting documents

When applying for a course, you’ll need to submit documents to support your application. Since documents vary depending on the course, you should read the course details page carefully to understand the entry requirements and any supporting information required upon application.

Examples could include your resume, a transcript of previous study, test results, a personal statement, identification documents or a folio of work. If your documents aren't in English, you’ll need to supply a certified English translation.

Entry pathways

If you didn’t get the ATAR you wanted, or you don’t quite meet the entry requirements for the course you had your heart set on, the good news is there are more pathways into university than you might think.

Here are a few examples of pathways you can take:

  • Study a different course with similar units and career outcomes, but a lower ATAR.
  • Use TAFE study as a stepping stone into your dream course.
  • Complete a Deakin College diploma to fast-track your way into an undergraduate degree.

Key dates and intakes

If you have the right ATAR for your course and you’ve double-checked your entry requirements, the next step is to familiarise yourself with Deakin’s intake dates.

Depending on your course, our flexible trimester system means you could start in Trimester 1 (March), Trimester 2 (July) or Trimester 3 (November).

Trimester 1

  • Applications can be made to VTAC.

Trimester 2 and 3

  • All applications are made directly to Deakin.

Scholarships

A Deakin scholarship is more than just a financial boost. It recognises your achievements and sets you on the pathway to success at university.

When you’re applying for a course, it’s a good idea to browse our available scholarships – you may be eligible for more than one. While most scholarship applications are made through Deakin’s Course and Scholarship Applicant Portal, it’s important to read the details on each scholarship page for the correct information on how to apply, benefits and eligibility criteria.

Adjustment factors: consideration for special circumstances

If your Year 12 studies have been impacted by challenging circumstances, you can apply for special consideration that acknowledges what you would have achieved if your circumstances were different. A successful application could add vital points to your ATAR.

There are a range of factors that can be considered for an ATAR adjustment, including but not limited to:

  • coming from a non-English speaking background
  • living with a disability or medical condition
  • difficult personal circumstances
  • being an elite athlete while studying.

Submitting your application to Deakin

Applications for Trimester 2 and 3 can be made directly to Deakin through our Course and Scholarship Applicant Portal.

When you’re ready to start your application, it’s important to have any required supporting documents on hand. Examples could include your resume, identification documents, a personal statement, or a folio of work.

  1. If you’re using the Course and Scholarship Applicant Portal for the first time, you'll need to create an account by clicking ‘register’. After completing the form you’ll receive an email that has your Applicant ID – use it to log in to the applicant portal.
  2. Once you’ve logged in, you can start your application. You’ll progress through the steps until the final step where you upload your supporting documents.
  3. After reviewing your responses, click ‘submit’ to complete your application.

What happens after you apply

If you apply to Deakin, you’ll be emailed with a receipt number upon completion of your application. We’ll usually notify you of the outcome of your application via email within 10 working days, however, some courses may take longer.

If you apply to VTAC, you’ll receive an outcome in your VTAC Online Account.
