Submitting your application to VTAC
Applications for Trimester 1 can be made to VTAC.
VTAC course applications are made online at www.vtac.edu.au. Before you start your application you’ll need to create a VTAC account and log in.
- Have any required supporting documents and identification on hand.
- Start the application by selecting 'course application' in your VTAC account.
- Enter your education history.
- List your course preferences.
- Review your application details and submit.

Use our course finder to discover the courses you could be eligible to apply for based on your ATAR. Please use this as a guide only, as ATARs can change from year to year.
If you’re interested in a particular study area such as law, business, arts or engineering, explore your interest area or search for courses by name. On each course page, you’ll find information such as last year’s ATAR and course entry requirements, professional recognition, career opportunities, course structure, fees and much more.
Understanding entry requirements
Before starting your application, it’s important to read through the entry requirements on the course page. Examples of entry requirements include a specified ATAR, English language requirements, prerequisites and special criteria. If you can tick off each entry requirement, you can confidently move onto the next stage of preparing your application.
If you don’t meet the entry requirements, you won’t be eligible to apply for the course. But that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s out of reach. You still may be able to enter the course through an alternate pathway.
When applying for a course, you’ll need to submit documents to support your application. Since documents vary depending on the course, you should read the course details page carefully to understand the entry requirements and any supporting information required upon application.
Examples could include your resume, a transcript of previous study, test results, a personal statement, identification documents or a folio of work. If your documents aren't in English, you’ll need to supply a certified English translation.
If you didn’t get the ATAR you wanted, or you don’t quite meet the entry requirements for the course you had your heart set on, the good news is there are more pathways into university than you might think.
Here are a few examples of pathways you can take:
- Study a different course with similar units and career outcomes, but a lower ATAR.
- Use TAFE study as a stepping stone into your dream course.
- Complete a Deakin College diploma to fast-track your way into an undergraduate degree.

Key dates and intakes
If you have the right ATAR for your course and you’ve double-checked your entry requirements, the next step is to familiarise yourself with Deakin’s intake dates.
Depending on your course, our flexible trimester system means you could start in Trimester 1 (March), Trimester 2 (July) or Trimester 3 (November).

Trimester 2 and 3
- All applications are made directly to Deakin.

When you’re applying for a course, it’s a good idea to browse our available scholarships – you may be eligible for more than one. While most scholarship applications are made through Deakin’s Scholarship Applicant Portal, it’s important to read the details on each scholarship page for the correct information on how to apply, benefits and eligibility criteria.
Special consideration and applying for SEAS
Have your Year 12 studies been impacted by challenging circumstances? When preparing your course application, you should also research your eligibility for special consideration. Special consideration applications for 2021 study close 9 October 2020.
Special consideration, sometimes referred to as the Special Entry Access Scheme (SEAS), recognises what you would have achieved if your circumstances were different. A successful application for special consideration can increase your aggregate score. This means you can be offered a place in a course with a lower rank than would usually be required.
You can apply for special consideration under the following categories:
- under-represented, regional and Indigenous students
- financial hardship
- disability or medical condition
- difficult life or family challenges (including the impacts of COVID-19 and the 2019/20 bushfires)
- elite athletes and performers.
Submitting your application to Deakin
If you're applying to start studying in Trimester 1, 2021, refer to 'submitting your application to VTAC'.
When you’re ready to start your application, it’s important to have any required supporting documents on hand. Examples could include your resume, identification documents, a personal statement, or a folio of work.
- If you’re using the Deakin Application Portal for the first time, you'll need to create an account by clicking ‘register’. After completing the registration form, a verification email will be sent to your email address. Click on the link in the email to log in to the Deakin Application Portal.
- Once you’ve logged in, you can start your course application. As you progress through the steps, you’ll be prompted to provide personal details and information about your education experience. You’ll also have the opportunity to upload supporting documents.
- You’ll progress to the review and submit section, where you’ll be able to review all the details you’ve provided and complete any outstanding sections of the application. Finally, make sure to read and accept the declaration before submitting.

What happens after you apply
If you apply to Deakin, you’ll be emailed with a receipt number upon completion of your application. We’ll usually notify you of the outcome of your application via email within 10 working days, however, some courses may take longer.
If you apply to VTAC, you’ll receive an outcome in your VTAC Online Account.
