How much experience do I need?

Credentials are available to candidates at various levels of experience. We understand that skills can be learned in the workplace as well as in the classroom. That’s why we offer credentials at three levels for anyone looking to certify the skills they’ve gained at work or in industry.

Deakin’s credential framework includes criteria for the level of skills you can demonstrate, as well as these key dimensions related to your experience to date:

  • your level of autonomy
  • the complexity of your work
  • your ability to influence in the workplace or in your industry.

Credential levels

Bachelor's-aligned

This level is suitable for an experienced person who takes ownership of agreed team goals and works across teams and stakeholders to coordinate actions. Candidates will most likely have about five years of experience in a relevant professional role. You may already have a diploma or certificate. However, this credential level is available to candidates without formal qualifications.

Pre-master's-aligned

This level is suitable for a senior professional who is confident in applying a broad range of knowledge, skills and expertise, and responsible for the performance of others and for attaining business outcomes. Candidates at this level will most likely have about seven years of experience in a relevant professional role, and possibly a bachelor’s degree. However, this credential level is available to candidates without formal qualifications.

Master's-aligned

This level is suitable for an advanced professional who leads the formation and implementation of strategy, contributes to original thinking and drives positive outcomes across an organisation. They typically have responsibility for work that spans internal and external stakeholders and teams across an organisation. Candidates at this level will most likely have about 10 years of experience in a relevant professional or leadership and they may have completed a bachelor’s degree or some postgraduate level short courses. However, this credential level is available to candidates without formal qualifications.

This guide is designed to give you a broad sense of which level might suit you at this time, depending on your current level of performance.
