Kristti's story

The Deakin Change 100 Lives campaign is making a difference to students’ lives in so many ways.

Thanks to a Change 100 Lives scholarship, Kristti is the first person in her family to go to university. The rewards are being shared by her entire family.

First in Family Scholarship

"I have been a mother since I was 19 years of age, and since then I've worked part time to put food on the table for my children. When my daughter turned 18, I mentioned university and she looked at me blankly. I understood this, because I never knew university was an option either.

My parents are loving and hard-working, but never attended university so I didn't know any different growing up. They are now in their 60s and still struggle to make ends meet. I want to break the cycle.

I realised I needed to not only create a future for myself – where one day I may be able to buy my own home or go on a holiday – but, more importantly, I needed to set an example for my children.

Discussion around the dinner table has changed from what's happening on TV to problems that are going on in the world. They ask more questions and I'm thankful I am learning to answer them.

My career goals are in the community sector, working with people to make this world a better place.

Deakin's generosity has inspired me and I hope one day in the future I can help someone else in my position. My sincere thank you. I am so very grateful."

I love going to university but without this scholarship, I was afraid of how I could continue to manage financially. This scholarship has lightened my financial burden, which allows me to focus on the most important and enjoyable thing about university - learning.
