Shaun's story

The Deakin Change 100 Lives campaign is making a difference in students’ lives in so many ways. Thanks to a Change 100 Lives scholarship, Shaun was able to move to Geelong from his home in Bendigo without the hardship of covering additional accommodation costs.

Geoff and Helen Handbury Accommodation Scholarship

"To pursue my passion in the patient-care aspect of medicine I needed to move from Bendigo, where I was living, to a centre that allowed me to learn and train as a surgeon.

I made the difficult decision to move to Geelong and study the Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Science at Deakin’s Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus. With the support I received from the Geoff and Helen Handbury Accommodation Scholarship, I was able to find a place to live conveniently located close to campus, which I shared with two other medical students. It was nice to have people around to study with and support each other.

The scholarship really allowed me to concentrate on my studies. With the extra time, I was able to contribute back to the community, volunteering for a refugee service, and work on research projects that interested me and have gone on to help my career.

The financial support I received allowed me to pay my rent in advance for the year, alleviating the stress and burden of worrying about when rent was due. It offered me valuable time that I'd have otherwise spent in employment to support myself living away from home.

I did very well at university, which helped me get a job at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne. This would not have been possible without the financial support from the scholarship I received."
