Our history in Geelong
Our ties with Geelong began with the establishment of our first campus at Waurn Ponds in 1974, creating Victoria's first regional university.
Waurn Ponds also became home to a number of Deakin's innovative strategic research centres and the collaborative Geelong Technology Precinct.
In 1994 Deakin acquired a historic wool store building in the Waterfront Precinct and two years later, after extensive restoration and development, Geelong's newest campus opened.
Deakin has played a lead role in the Geelong Waterfront Precinct Rejuvenation Initiative, a plan that has seen the Waterfront Precinct go from derelict to a stunning and inviting area. The area includes heritage-listed architecture, parkland, cafes, attractions and public spaces.

Through affiliation and support of many Geelong organisations Deakin has developed meaningful and mutually beneficial partnerships that enable two-way engagement and valuable experiences for Deakin students, staff and Alumni and in turn members of the community.

Making education more accessible
Deakin is part of the G21 alliance, a group of government, business and community organisations working together to improve the lives of people within the Geelong region.
Education and Training is one of G21's key priorities (known as pillars).
As a member and pillar leader, Deakin is actively involved in planning initiatives to make educational opportunities in the region more accessible, including enhanced digital facilities for secondary school students, training programs and industry skill audits.
Violence prevention programs
Deakin's Health and Social Development (SHSD) area has developed a community program to bring attention to violence against women.
The program has been presented at schools, universities, sporting clubs and workplaces across the state. The 'You the Man' program consists of a 30-minute play about dating, violence and sexual assault, plus a moderated post-performance panel discussion.
Post-performance discussion is tailored to the local setting, circumstances and other violence prevention activities happening locally.
Locations
The program can be run from any location in Victoria. We source panel members for the discussion component from local support agencies and aim to introduce people to the local resources that are available around them.
