Clinical simulation centres
Deakin campuses are equipped with cutting-edge, purpose-built clinical simulation centres. These centres are expertly designed to simulate real hospital and community clinic environments so you can develop core clinical nursing skills. They provide an opportunity for you to learn by working on patient care scenarios that mirror the real world.
Learn in real-life clinical settings
Starting placements from your first year will give you early exposure to clinical environments, allowing you to develop your skills and graduate job-ready. At Deakin you will experience practical, hands-on learning through clinical placements where you will work alongside medical professionals in real-life scenarios. As part of your degree, you will gain 800 hours of clinical experience in a variety of settings – including acute and sub-acute care, medical and surgical care, aged care, rehabilitation, paediatrics, community nursing and mental health nursing – through Deakin’s extensive medical partnership network.
I was impressed from the very beginning to see the sophisticated clinical practice labs and the level of education Deakin provided for the nursing students. Seminars were interactive, and lecturers were very supportive and friendly.

Get recognition for prior learning
If you have previous nursing experience – whether it is previous study or work experience as a registered nurse – you may be eligible to gain credit towards your degree. Deakin offers students with previous nursing experience a range of ways to apply for this recognition, allowing you to finish your degree in less time – potentially in as little as one year.
Gain a global perspective with industry partnerships around the world
You may have the opportunity to participate in an international study tour as an elective unit to explore health care in another country, such as Bhutan, China, the Philippines or Thailand. You could also be eligible for experiences such as undertaking a trimester with VIA University College, Viborg (Denmark) and gaining credit towards your degree.
These global experiences enable you to appreciate the importance of the nurse’s role in different environments and understand the meaning of global citizenship through practical experience.
Note: We acknowledge that the situation regarding the coronavirus (COVID – 19) outbreak is evolving and fast-moving, however we are hopeful that our study tour programs will still proceed in 2021. The safety of our students is our priority and we will ensure we communicate if there are any changes to the status our programs.
