Facilities

The School of Life and Environmental Sciences is located across three of our campuses in Melbourne, Geelong and Warrnambool. We house state-of-the-art science labs with contemporary design and infrastructure, high quality and specialised technologies and equipment, and access to renowned coastlines and environments.

Inspiring locations, first-class facilities and equipment

Studying at Deakin gives science students access to cutting-edge technology and the best in facilities. We have advanced equipment for scientists and dedicated spaces like our aquaculture facilities, biomedical and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) labs.

Contemporary design and infrastructure, combined with high-tech research spaces, supports student learning and helps us to develop world-leading research.

Outside of our labs and in the field we offer real, high-quality, practical experiences. Our campuses are surrounded by some the most diverse biological, marine and coastal ecosystems in Australia. Our hands-on approach has students learning and assessing the health of our environments, conducting sustainability assessment and surveying wildlife.

Our locations

The Melbourne Burwood Campus is a short trip from the CBD, sitting alongside Gardiner's Creek and its natural parkland environment. Our Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus is set on expansive grounds, close to famous surf beaches and coastline. Our Warrnambool Campus is set on the banks of the Hopkins River, at one end of the Great Ocean Road, and offers an ideal, more personal experience.

Crime Scene House

Located at our Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus, the Crime Scene House is a purpose-built simulation facility where students and researchers can develop their skills and knowledge in forensic science.

Laboratory teaching and research spaces

Our modern chemistry, physiology and preparation labs are equipped with start-of-the-art technologies and contemporary design.
We have access to the technology precinct, giving us capabilities in materials, chemistry and environmental engineering. Students also have access to biomedical labs, with our close links to the Deakin Medical School, and the Queenscliff Marine Science Centre.

Specialised equipment

Learning is enhanced by a range of specialised equipment, including optical microscopy, imaging systems, wildlife-tracking technology, infrared motion-sensing wildlife cameras, remotely operated underwater vehicles, sonar and GPS, and microbiome sequencing and sample preparation equipment. Our collaborative relationship with the Institute of Frontier Materials (IFM) provides students with access to the nuclear magnetic resonance facility, and a scanning electron microscope.

Vehicles and boats

The school's own fleet of vehicles is available to staff and students across all three campuses, including twin cabs, four-wheel drives, station wagons and a light rigid truck for towing our larger boats at Warrnambool.

Deakin's research vessel, Yolla, is equipped with highly specialised, multibeam sonar and GPS. This enables researchers and students to better understand our marine coastal biodiversity through the use of the most advanced oceanographic mapping technologies. Yolla has the latest generation seafloor mapping systems, which are used to develop detailed pictures of the ocean floor.

In the field

Students of our environment courses go beyond the classroom and benefit from hands-on, practical experiences in our surrounding lands and waters. From Cape Conran and the Grampians, to the Otways and Queenscliff – our students enjoy many different experiences from day one.
