Biography

Dr Melissa Bloomer has more than 20 year experience as a registered nurse in intensive care (ICU), general acute and sub-acute care settings.  With a passion for research, Melissa joined Deakin University in early 2016.

Melissa's primary research interests relate to end-of-life care in acute and critical care environments, including management, communication and decision-making, family care, and nurse preparedness for dying and death. Melissa's work focuses primarily on adults, including exploring the unique and often additional needs of older people and culturally and linguistically diverse populations at the end of life.

In 2020, Melissa was named Postdoctoral Researcher of the year by the European Association for Palliative Care (EAPC); a significant achievement in recognition of her contribution to palliative care in acute and critical care settings.

In 2019, Melissa was the recipient of an Endeavour Executive Leadership Award.  This highly prestigious award enabled Melissa to spend six weeks at the International Observatory on End of Life Care at Lancaster Univeristy, UK, undertaking research related to volunteers in end of life care.

From 2017 to 2019, Melissa was the recipient of an Alfred Deakin Postdoctoral Research Fellowship to explore 'Best Practice in End-of-Life Care in Acute Hosptials in Private and Public Settings'.

Melissa also holds several external leadership roles including:

  • Deputy Chair, End of Life Policy Chapter, Australian College of Nursing (ACN)
