Improving health and wellbeing
Covering the broad spectrum of health, our research is helping to improve the lives and wellbeing of people and communities on a global scale. From medicine, ageing, chronic illness and disability to nutrition, physical activity and child health, we're continually striving to uncover new frontiers through persistent curiosity and ground-breaking research.
Featured thought leaders
Our world-class research teams are led by true innovators and experts in their fields.
Deakin is a key partner in the Geelong Centre for Emerging Infectious Diseases – Australia’s first ‘One Health’ facility. It takes a new, multidisciplinary approach to managing infectious diseases in people, animals, and the environment.
In a world-first, our researchers have pioneered the industrial production of high-value short fibre materials. The potential of these tiny fibres is hugely promising – already, discoveries in stem cell expansion are set to improve leukaemia treatment across the globe.
Our research in autism has led to the adoption of improved diagnostic and treatment guidelines by the international medical community.
In the mental health domain, teams of scientists are collaborating on major programs to improve understanding and treatment of psychiatric disorders.
Deakin researchers are also overseeing Australia’s longest-running longitudinal study on child development. Insights gleaned from this project will improve public health policy and potentially break inter-generational cycles of disadvantage.
Institutes and Strategic research centres
Institute for Frontier Materials (IFM)
Recognised as one of Australia’s leading materials research organisations, IFM fosters innovation in materials design and performance.
Executing materials science and engineering, our research tackles challenges in areas such as medical diagnostics, biomaterials, and nanotechnology.
Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition (IPAN)
A world leading research institute, IPAN is dedicated to improving the health and quality of life of Australians.
Some of our research includes studies in obesity prevention, cognitive and mental health, consumer food choices and healthy behaviours in early childhood.
Institute for Intelligent Systems Research and Innovation (IISRI)
IISRI makes a difference to society by researching the problems encountered by systems that operate with uncertainty, variability and change.
Our research focuses on defence systems and robotics, haptics, motion simulation and process modelling.
Centre for Molecular and Medical Research (MMR)
MMR combines the leading medical and biomolecular research programs from Deakin’s Faculty of Health and the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment.
Our research is focused on basic gene discovery and molecular analysis.
Centre for Pattern Recognition and Data Analytics (PRaDA)
We focus on the discovery and effective use of patterns in large-scale data.
We contribute to a broad spectrum of health improvements through the design and development of new tools and smarter technologies.
Centre for Innovation in Mental and Physical Health and Clinical Treatment (IMPACT)
IMPACT is a multi-disciplinary strategic research centre. We conduct clinical, epidemiological and laboratory-based research. This enables us to contribute to the understanding and impact of psychiatric, musculoskeletal, metabolic and other health disorders.
Centre for Quality and Patient Safety Research (QPS)
Led by Deakin’s School of Nursing and Midwifery, QPS strives to be a world leader in applied health service research.
Our focus is on knowledge translation, particularly in relation to clinical care, quality and patient safety.
Centre for Social and Early Emotional Development (SEED)
The Centre for Social and Early Emotional Development combines life-course, clinical and public health research and practice.
We promote health and wellbeing from conception through to adulthood and into the next generation.
Centre for Chemistry and Biotechnology (CCB)
We seek to understand how molecules are made, how they can be utilised and how they work in complex biological systems.
Our research covers areas such as pharmaceuticals, medical devices, human and animal health, and the environment.
Centre for Population Health Research (CPHR)
We aim to deliver population health improvements through our extensive portfolio of public health research, implementation, training and advocacy.
We work together to combat challenges such as childhood obesity, infectious diseases, and work health and wellbeing.
Centre for Sport Research (CSR)
CSR is a new strategic research centre at Deakin. With academics from the School of Exercise and Nutrition and the Deakin Business School, we unite several research areas to enable the university to extend its reputation as a leader in sport research.
We use the latest knowledge and technology to improve performance, participation and governance in sport and exercise science, sports development, sports management and sports marketing.
We work collaboratively with a number of academic institutes, government organisations, not-for-profit services and industry bodies.
It’s these partnerships that form the foundation of our broad network and research capabilities throughout Australia and overseas.
Western Alliance Academic Health Science Centre is a partnership of Deakin University, Federation University and 11 health-service providers operating across the western region of Victoria. It aims to strengthen existing collaborations by formalising relationships between the partners that have been sustained over the history of the region’s settlement and development.
The Geelong Centre for Emerging Infectious Diseases
The Geelong Centre for Emerging Infectious Diseases (GCEID) is a collaborative, multidisciplinary research partnership between Deakin University, Barwon Health and CSIRO’s Australian Animal Health Laboratory (AAHL) based on a 'One Health' approach to understanding and mitigating the risks posed by emerging infectious diseases.
As well as Deakin's institutes and strategic research centres, the Faculty of Health supports a range of research centres that focus on improving health and wellbeing.
These range from investigating chronic diseases such as obesity and diabetes to neuroscience, rural medicine and infectious disease.
