Work experience programs

Our work experience programs are structured for students to try hands-on activities that will help them gain an insight into the wide range of career opportunities available in the STEM discipline studies area.

Important notice

With the COVID-19 situation rapidly evolving, the safety and wellbeing of the community remains our top priority. Unfortunately this means that we have decided to cancel this year's work experience programs. This decision has not been made lightly and we apologise for any inconvenience.

We are exploring alternative ways to engage with your students and will keep you updated should we be in a position to offer a program later in the year. Thank you for your support and we hope to see these programs return in 2021.

Key information

Through our range of programs, students can gain an insight into the university environment and an opportunity to observe and learn from real tertiary activities. The programs are designed to help students discover possible career paths, develop a CV, experience workplace settings, and build their team work and networking skills.

The programs meet Department of Education Training guidelines and are renumerated according to Deakin University guidelines at $15 per day. All students are provided with a certificate of completion.

Program places are limited and are highly sought after. We encourage interested students to discuss this opportunity with their career practitioner or work experience coordinator before applying.

STEM Work Experience for Girls

This week-long program, designed for females interested in science, technology, design or environment, provides an introduction to STEM at a tertiary level and allows participants to experience possible STEM career pathways in a fun and nurturing environment.

Attendees will experience a range of workshops and activities across the science, engineering, architecture and construction management fields, alongside gaining personal development skills such as CV and interview preparation, safety inductions and team-building activities.

Engineering Work Experience

Year 10 students who have a passion for design and engineering can apply to take part in our Engineering Work Experience Program. This week-long program provides an introduction to engineering at a tertiary level, and allows participants to experience possible career pathways in a fun and nurturing environment.

Students spend the week in the School of Engineering at Deakin’s Centre for Advanced Design in Engineering Training (CADET) experiencing cutting-edge research, working with current university students, and participating in a range of engineering workshops and activities. Students will also gain personal development skills, such as CV and interview preparation, and experience safety inductions and team-building activities.

Laboratory Science Work Experience

Located at our Melbourne Burwood Campus, this week-long work experience program is designed for high-achieving Year 10 students who are strongly motivated in science – preferably in molecular biology and cell science. Students will experience laboratory science in an interactive and demonstrative environment.

The program will include participation in micro-molecular biological techniques, invertebrate and vertebrate biology, chemistry practicals, tracking and mapping using GPS/GIS, ecological survey techniques and more.
